Sunday Ride in ATL

Well, I was proud of myself for having remembered to get my wife a box of candy for Valentine's, but I ended up being shamed in the gift-giving department. She arranged for me to take a ride over Atlanta today in the Flying Fortress "Liberty Belle," which has been visiting here for the last few days.

We were at relatively low altitude and it was absolutely freezing. It gave me a whole new respect for how cold it must have been flying these babies on missions at 25,000 feet or more.

The guys that flew those back in WWII really paid their dues, in many cases they were teenagers or a little older, very tough fellows.

Yep, my dad was in his mid-twenties at the time (he was in the infantry) and was considered an old man.

Very cool ... I saw the ad in the AJC for tickets and thought about doing it myself.

When I went through a B-17 at the Palm Springs Museum a while back, the thing that amazed me was how small that airplane is. It looks much bigger on film. The cockpit is tiny--two small seats with minimal headroom. The fuselage is barely wide enough to fit two guys abreast, and the skin is almost like tin foil. I don't know how they fit 10 guys in that plane.

No, but it was a bumpy day, so I pretended it was flak bursts.
