The MB equivalent to PWD's car:

Or, "If Paul had bought a Mercedes SL back in the day instead of the 911S, it would probably be this car. Absolutely astonishing condition:

Those 280SL [corrected - we were looking at 190SLs too] MBs are gorgeous. I've come very close to buying one for the wife, 2 or 3 times. They are still affordable, and will definitely not depreciate.

I sold my 280sl to buy the SC. Beautiful cars, but nowhere near the 911 in performance in any measure.

This thing is absolutely sensational !!
The only common denominators for the 911 and the 280SL are they are both made in Stuttgart and also have mechanical injection.
Otherwise their design and purpose come from totally different directions.

Cheers,
Dennis.

And like a 911, it is a beautiful object that stands on its own, ie. doesn't need to be compared to anything else.

BTW, in case anyone didn't notice, that is a 39k mile original paint car.

German quality in it´s finest moment. Maybe that would actually be a nice vehicle for PWD. Classic senior citizen automobile. I mean that in the nicest way!

Staggering.

I've loved these cars for a long time. I think 130mph is wildly optimistic, and the automatic that I drove... well Jeremy Clarkson said it the best when he reviewed a 280SL:

"Then you press the loud pedal ... and... Well, it gets louder, but not much else happens."

there's probably a pelican-equivalent SL board ripping this car to shreds right now.

Nope...didn't like 'em much, even when they were new. Drove out like a Buick...

It's the kind of car I pictured myself it at maybe 55-60; I was 24 when I sold it.

Steve - tell me about it. I'm a sucker for old cars, boats, guns...
