Vista is different, it will refuse to work with drivers that do, in fact, work.

K9-You state that yours works fine. Can you copy "premium content" DVDs? I on't get into copyright issues on this thread, but I back up all of my copywrite protected CDs and DVDs. Vista seems to interfere with that.
I have not copied any DVD's, I just download the files from bit torrent and then burn them to DVD, really no issues as of yet so I am happy. The only software I have installed that is not Vista compliant is Corel Photo Shop 10...yet it works, just disables the Vista Aero features while it's running.

I guess my reason for not even considering it is that I haven't been sold on what it can do that XP cannot. I've seen the 'cool' cascading windows thing, but I use alt-tab or shift/alt/tab to get around as it is. I avoid the mouse at all costs.

I've been with OSs since the DOS days. Used em all. Used non-Microsoft OSs before they all gave up (anyone ever try GeoWorks?). I have been to the darkest reaches of hell (Windows ME) and I am now on XP-Pro.

XP has been good to me. Of course it is not perfect, but it closed the gap (in my mind) with the only things that macs did better. With XP, I get a device, I plug it in, and it works. I leave my system running for weeks at a time with infrequent crashes. I am happy with XP.

If MSFT wants me to leave this, they will have to do a heck of a lot better job wooing me. I am not leaving this time, not without a justification.

Yep, I agree 100%, even with the Geoworks OS! I used Geoworks back in the early 90's ('89-'91). I have been very satisfied with WinXP and I will resist Vista as long as possible.

Vista was in beta for how long? Blame the thrid party software and hardware companies for not developing compatible drivers. They had plenty of time to develop them, and they chose not to.
That's what I thought. I chose to try Vista thinking it would work for me. It does not. I'm not some computer geek that wants it to do crazy *****. I just want to do basic stuff that I've had no problem doing on all 3 of my XP machines. My new, "more advanced" computer does less than my 3 year old AMD laptop. Where's the value in that?

On your second point-why should 3rd parties change their product to accomodate an inferior product? Also, I like my 1 year old software. It does exactly what I need it to do. Why should I re-learn new, not to mention pay for, new software when mine isn'; A-that old at all, and B-works great? Yes. There is an answer-billionaires that want to be trillionaires. Our needs are no longer the priority.

It's at this point that I feel the general public is being pushed onto a very expensive, and annoying merry go round run by a handful of people. I look forward to the next group of innovators that make this crap obsolete.

If you think I'm some anti Microsoft zealot-check my threads. I hate Apple "almost" as much. I've always liked my XP machines. But, I may have to give Apple another try.

I predict that Best Buy will not accept any responsibility for the incompatabilities or shortcomings of Vista and will only allow your return WITH the 15% restocking fee. It that is the case, you will probably be better off keeping the laptop and buying a copy of XP from Newegg for $90.
You are probably right. I'll post results tonight. I have already weighed the $100 loss vs the extra $100 outlay to make it right. I think I'll opt out and be glad I escaped with a "slap" on the wrist and a valuable (expensive?) lesson. The last time I chose the other way, I ended up selling my 6 month old ibook on ebay for half of what i paid for it because it was so bad. Another lesson learned.

When returning something that I opened to Best Buy, I always say that the salesman told me it would do X, and that I am returning it because it will not do X. I'm yet to be charged a restocking fee. I have also gotten very good and carefully peeling the seals on software and resealing it with super glue. (I've had software not run on my machine, and they ALWAYS charge the restocking fee on opened software.)

That is exactly what happened. I brought it in, told the nice young lady at the returns desk that the salesman said it would be compatible with my old software, it was not, and I would like a full refund. She agreed. I got my money back. I'm a satisfied Best Buy customer. A happy ending.

But the problem remains-what to buy? I still like XP. I had a bad experience with Apple. I'll check around for the latest laptops that still have XP I guess.

PS- ALWAYS save all the packing material and rebox like new.

Word but what a PIA. My garage is full of empty equipment boxes. The two biggest offendors/coffins come from my HP Plotter and 62 inch projection.

I have a floor to ceiling wall unit dedicated to empty boxes in my basement. Agreed-it's a pita.

SM-we've discussed Apple before. Would a Macbook allow me to do what I'm trying to do? I.e. copy and burn (with the appropriate software) copywrite protected DVDs/CDs, and stream audio and video to an entertainment center.

I think you answered this one before too but, how about my Office software and Roxio?

Thx.
