Yes, I typed that wrong on purpose. The use of "your" in place of the correct contraction for "you are," which is, of course, "you're" has nearly become the norm. I see it over 50% of the time here on Pelican and frequently enough on writings on the Internet. I've seen it in brochures and advertising. I just wonder how much longer before it gets by some copy editor at a major newspaper.

Indeed, this is one of my pet peeves. However, I suspect that the age of Blackberries and the new shorter word forms contributes to this mis usage.

List some of the other common errors like "here" and "hear." Or, the three different forms of "there." I've seen some that really make me LOL.

All the above are words I've seen misspelled within the past week, some of them even here on Pelican. There's a pertinent "For Better of for Worse" comic strip in today's paper about common grammatical errors, too.

I was recently browsing a sports magazine (ESPN? Sports Illustrated? Whatever) and in 30 seconds of skimming a single article, had spotted 3 obvious mistakes. It's pathetic to see the state of our own language. I feel almost French in my passion about pursuing proper English (blech), but it really does make a difference.

I took a look; very good. The master at phonetic word switches is Bil (yes, that is how he spells it) Keane who draws "The Family Circus." Then there was Norm Crosby who could come up with some dandies.

It's the story about Cinderella who lived in a big hark douse with her mean old mep-stother and her two sisty uglers. And they made Cinderella do all the worty dirk while they sat around cheating ocolates and maging readazines.

And, one day, while Cinderella was in the kitchen, flopping the moor, the two sisty uglers came in a said, "Guess what? The prandsome hince is browing a fancy thress drall and we're invited! It's too bad that YOU can't go!"

So, Cinderella went back to the kitchen with ears in her tyes. And she was just about to ckickacee a fricen when, suddenly, there was a linding bash of flight, and standing beside her was a feautiful bairy.

And Cinderella said, "Who are you and what do you want?"

And the feautiful bairy said, "Well, I'm your mairy fod-gother."

And Cinderella said, "Well, may I go to the ball?"

And the fairy said, "That's quite a wish, but okay."

So she wave her magic wand and, instantly, Cinderella was transformed into a bavishing reauty. She had on a lone white gatin sown and a necklace of pubies and rearls, and on her feet were two tiny sass glippers.

The fairy said, "Now, you may go, but you must promise to be mome by hidnight."

And Cinderella said, "Okay." So she was off.

Soon, she cast to the camele (That's "came to the castle"). And Cinderella jumped out and the first pwo teople she ran into were the two sisty uglers. And she was so beautiful, they didn't even Cinderize recognella!

So, they introduced her to the prandsome hince, and he said, "May I dave this hance. You're so beautiful, you remind me of Beeping Sleauty!" He was just about to ask for her marr in handiage when, suddenly, the stock clarted to trike swelve, and Cinderella ban from the rall. But, as she did, one of her sass glippers flipped from her soot. The prandsome hince picked it up and said, "Now all I have to do is look for the woman whose soot this flipper sits, and I'll know whom I've laalen in fove with!"

So, the next day, he went from house to house (and you can't turn THAT around!), and, soon, he came to the Cin where housederella lived and docked on the noor. And who should answer but the two sisty uglers. He said, "I'm looking for the woman whose soot this flipper sits." Well, of course, their beet were to fig!

But, then, it was Cinderella's turn and (guess what?) the flipper pitted cerfectly, they were married, and they happed lively ever after."

Yes, the same thing drives me insane as well. Daily, I either see it online (often from older folks that should no better ) or in emails at work. That's the one that really gets me. Some of the mistakes are common problems for many people like the "there"s and "too"s. But some of the mistakes, like breaks/brakes or seems/seams, shouldn't exist past Jr High. It's disgusting, especially since so much of it sees it's way into corp America and professional correspondence.

Language evolves over time...who the fk can understand Shakesspears use of language today? I use U as a shortcut, and Boyz as a derogatory term. It was quite ironic that the R Gruppe picked up its usage, which created a bit of mirth on my end of the net.

I am totally disfunctional when it comes to spelling, I can look up a word and 5 minutes later I have forgotten how to spell it. Also most of what I post is not edited or cleaned up, U get it almost as a stream of conscienceness. I do go back and fix the bad typing.
