Driving from Jensen Beach FL. to Sylva NC - Pick me a route

I am getting sick of the interstate. I am driving my 911 up to NC from FL and I am thinking I might take several extra hours and drive a more interesting route.

I think, once I am in North Florida I can find some really cool secondary roads.

Any suggestions will be noted as I try to plot my route. I will be leaving on Wed. Afternoon and just need to be in NC by Thursday afternoon sometime. This is next week BTW not this holiday week.

Limited Interstate or Turnpike runs are o.k. to get me from one fun road to the next.

I might have to break my "Give Georgia none of my business" rule this time.

FYI - When I drove up to NC from FL last week, 730 miles, I saw 5 speed traps, all 5 were in the Southern 25-30 miles of Georgia the entire I95 Georgia stretch is 120 miles. I saw none in Florida, South Carolina, or North Carolina. Just Georgia, as usual.

just did miami to cleveland to chicago and back in a week
in my new/old MB 300sd collecting hobie cat hulls

ran 27 then 41 but only a few hours a day mostly on the superslabs
to make the miles but jumped off enuff to see the country

had to go thru alanta to see kin and get a free bed

perry in mid ga was neat with lots of older homes

left alanta to the NE on I 985 that turn into 23 then 441 that goes thru sylva and on thru the mts and the tickietack on each side
did see a black bear up close at a over look

anyway try the backroads near the slabs they are still there
and it is eazy to jump on and off

jim,
i agree with giving the interstate the cold shoulder, however, if you are hungry and near lumberton, i can say with no doubt that fullers restaurant[right off 95]is a really, really, good place to chow down.
some of the best fried chicken i have ever had. terrific lunch buffet deal.
safe travel. via con dios.

Lumberton is a little out of the way, actually really in the wrong direction. I am traveling from Florida's East coast to the East side of the Smoky Mountain National Park.

K9Torro - I am looking at 17 now. Thanks for the suggestion.

BTW - I looked for you at MM5-MM& and did not see any State troopers out there. I was going to flash my lights and beep my horn and wave.

Next time you see either a Red 911, Grey A-6 or Britght Blue FJ doing that you know its me.

While I hate the Georgia Road taxes I have nothing against you, you are doing your job and I know it must suck walking up to car after car wondering if this is the one that will ruin your day.

FYI - as much as I hate road taxes I do not take it out on the Officer, I am polite and look out for their safety and set them as much at ease as possible.

take 27 from orlando (or wherever is convenient) up thru ocala and then to williston, then up 27/41 thru archer, newberry, high springs (beep as you go by), then either 41 north to a short i75 run or 441 north and then up thru lake city...

Also a nice back road run from Macintosh (on 441, between Gville and ocala) up to Archer, lots of curves...

Might want to get a DeLorme Florida Atlas ... it shows all the little back roads

Good tip Idiot. I was toying with running the turnpike up to Orlando then jumping off and hitting secondary roads up through Georgia and into NC heading towards Maybe Highlands NC then running up to Sylva from there.

I am liking the middle of the state thing and getting off I95 for once.

Maybe I'll even jump off the turnpike in Ocala where the roads get really nice.

Thanks!! Good suggestion.

Turnpike ends just before Ocala, so you'll have to

From there, take I75 up to like 484, then go W to dunnellon and go up 41 all the way thru williston, archer, etc. slight change on original route....

Turnpike kinda turns into 75 that is what I meant.

I really would like to get North of Orlando before getting off a major mover road.

I would imagine once north of Ocala things ar epretty quiet until Lake City.

Once I get to my office tomarrow afternoon and have a better internet connection I will startmapping out my route.

Thanks for the suggestion!!
