On the subject of bear traps...
I was back packing in the Sierra Nevada several years ago. We were out in the middle of nowhere in a designated wilderness area and the Ranger had a bit of a problem with a bear 'trap'.
Unfortunately for the bear it had fallen head first into the pit beneath a chemical toilet and got stuck half way in. Unfortunately for the Ranger it was up to him to get the bear out!
