Would you like to see the slap in the face letter I got from State Farm telling me that my insurance rates reflect the Florida Senate mandated cost reduction as they tripled my insurance premium from $1400 a year to $6500 a year.

Of course insurance companies are stealing from us, and they have really good lobbyists and pour a lot of money into them to make sure they can steal from us.

Here's a statement that may help put it in perspective for some of the terminally uninformed out here.

Nearly two years ago, Hurricane Katrina, aided by the construction of a substandard levee protection system, killed over 1,800 people, damaged 200,000 homes, and destroyed schools, hospitals, roads, bridges, parks, and forest lands. The government's response to one of the largest disasters in the nation's history has been ineffective and weak, and is a collective stain on the heart and soul of our nation. Of the 148,000 Louisianans who have applied for aid to rebuild their homes, only 30,000 have received grants, 86,000 Gulf Coast families are still living in FEMA trailers, and 750,000 residents remain displaced.

If only there were 1 or 2 decent ones in that 750,000 it would be totally different.

See the part about 148k grant applications & only 30k recieved? lets see if we really got $91,000,000,000.00 & 30k people got checks, thats $3,033,000.00 per person. I think that when the rest of the people get their checks things should be OK. There is a little disparity between what the govt is saying & what they are doing.

Granted - I think a lot of increases are not about the actual cost of a risk as they are about chasing customers away...

But if you look at the big picture - over the long term - we have built too much in this country (not to mention the piss-poor quality) in flood, wind and storm prone areas. This has been encouraged by lax underwriting by insurance companies, federal flood insurance, bad zoning and shoddy construction pracitices.

The market will determine the cost of insurance in these places and it will not be pretty....

I am about to cancel my insurance and self insure. I have decided to sell my vacation home and get rid of my mortgage and just self insure putting $6500 a year in a savings account. I have not had any damage in 12 years so far so I am willing to take this bet, 10 years from now I'll habe $65K in my bank account instead of State Farm. A friend of mine did this 20 years ago with a vacation home in the Bahamas and even after Floyd destroyed it in '99 he is still ahead of the game.

I wasn't whining, I was trying to have a discussion about the situation that is now the Nations issue, and that is when insurance companies are allowed to collect premiums for 40 years and then not pay for damages when they occur. OUR Gov. is allowing it to happen.

And I don't have a *****ing clue about cancer, I only lost, in the past year (and some I had to help take care of too) 5 very close people in my like, so no, I don't have a clue. I also stated that it was wrong for the Ins. companies do do what they are doing, but when they do, as I have found out, Government is in the business of taking (like the MOB) not giving back. You are correct, I used the incorrect term. He went to sea, he spent pretty much his entire adult life working for the NMU, and went back to sea at age 60. I can dig out his sea papers. Those who know me, know that I don't have top BS. I guess since I loaded & unloaded ships while in college that makes me a long shoreman, and the union did try to get me to quit school & stay on.
