I saw Floyd right before they came out with Dark Side. The show was in quadraphonic. Anyone recall that format. I had the coolest little amp that had the 4 VU meters. I digress, anyway, my buddy and I were on the second row. They were trying out Dark Side. OMG the most amazing concert I had ever seen. And like I said earlier get the new Gilmour DVD. He has Richard Wright on keyboards, Phil Manzerna on guitar (Roxy Music) and a slew of backing superb players. The sound mix is awe inspiring. Gilmour is mostly playing strats and I never realized how much he bent strings or used his whammy. A guitar geeks delight and besides Porsches guitars are my main hobby.

I too saw the Floyd way back when. Unfortunately, I was too "Comfortably Numb" to remember much of it.

I was into Floyd in HS and early college (I progressed into Radiohead). I still think they are one of the handful of "great" bands (I list my all time top four as the Beatles, Pink Floyd, Radiohead, and Elliott Smith), but the later stuff (post-DSOTM) just doesn't do it for me anymore.

Floyd's BEST album is undoubtedly DSOTM, but my favorite one is Meddle.

Wow! CJ - you like Elliott Smith too!
I love his music and ALWAYS have an Elliott Smith cd in the car - currently a compilation that I made for a friend back in England. I love his songwriting and vocal style, so melancholy yet beautiful. It really speaks to me. I just wish he was still around.

Sorry, get back on topic...

Elliott Smith was incredible. I had the pleasure of seeing him at a venue opening for Radiohead, Beck, and the Beastie Boys (yes, it was an ecclectic concert). It was not long before he passed on.

I am still shocked that he never found a mass audience. I am convinced that anyone who listens to FIGURE 8 will be a fan for life.

I played "Figure 8" and "XO" for my sister last time she was over to visit. She liked "XO" better, though I don't know why. I can't decide which album I like best, although I bought "New Moon" when that came out recently, so that is my current favorite but maybe because it's a double album!

I dunno; New Moon doesn't seem cohesive to me, for obvious reasons. Good stuff on there, but it doesn't come together like his other albums, if you ask me.

Sorry to wander off topic slightly, but

Well, I agree that it isn't cohesive but it is a bit of a 'scrapbook' album and those tracks were never intended to be an album by themselves as you suggest. It's interesting and I suppose I like it because there's twice as much on it as anything else.
Not wishing to stray from the topic of Floyd, but for anyone unfortunate enough to be unfamiliar with Elliott...

I saw them live 3 times in Rotterdam the best concert and best sound ever ! i just smoked a few but my buddy had some mushrooms. The huge pig they used in the show scared him so much he passed out

I also went to the Wall concert in Berlin but it was nowhere near a real floyd concert.

I saw the Delicate Sound of Thunder show, what 10 years ago. PF is the best "big room" sound Ive ever heard. I dont know how they do it, ive seen lots of A acts in the same big room and noone seems to get close. That includes the pristine Steely Dan last week last week with 10 years newer technology.

I saw the Momentary Lapse of Reason tour twice(NJ, FL). Thought it was fantastic but heard Roger Waters tour was better. I still find that hard to believe though. Ed did a plane crash into the stage?

Austin the first time i went i think it was the Learning to fly tour 1984 - 1985 not sure of exact year but it had the plane in the show.
But the cool part was some real planes came over throwing out smoke and the lasershow was projected on it before the concert started. The most impressive was the qaulity of sound, back then Pink Floyd had the best and most expensive pa system in the world.

I,ve been to many concerts but nothing comes even close to Floyd

I was never into Pink Floyd, just Little Feat, Steely Dan, The Grateful Dead (studio work only) and Led Zeppelin, but I'm just a drummer, what do I know?

Hey, now dont be like that. Aside from the sheer convenience of only needing to punch information into a drum machine once, I'll take a real drummer any day. -)

[QUOTE=legion;3502229]Man, I was obsessed with Floyd in high school/college.QUOTE]

They played in a concert on campus at UCSD (San Diego) when I was in grad school. With the exception of a Velvet Underground concert at a local defunct roller skating rink, it was the most totally stoned event I've ever attended (didn't make Woodstock).

Yup; they crested with DSOTM, and slipped just a bit with their ode to Syd, Wish You Were Here. Not much at first, but they changed pretty rapidly after that. I kind of lost interest at about The Wall.

And Meddle? That's the Floyd I will always remember... They did a fantastic rendition of Echoes in Seattle in the early (mid? geez that was awhile ago...) seventies. This is the classic Floyd...
