knew who the racist asshats were
and the worst of them are now in the GOP camp
Just what party is Robert Bird a member of???

Quote:
but most of the racist southern demo's became members of the GOP
Why would they join the party that overwhelmingly supported something they had were and voted against???? The dems have kept the black man down by keeping him on the dem plantation. History proves you wrong. Give us names and who else besides Bird was in the KKK?? Name a Republican that was a Grand Wizard of the Klan??? The Vote proves my point, where is your proof???

Participation in the Ku Klux Klan
In 1942, 24-year-old Byrd joined the Ku Klux Klan (KKK), whose parades in Matoaka, West Virginia, he had witnessed in his childhood. He was unanimously elected Exalted Cyclops, or leader, of his local chapter.[4]

Byrd, in his autobiography, attributed the beginnings of his political career to this incident, although he lamented that they involved the Klan. According to Byrd's recollection, KKK official Joel L. Baskin told him "You have a talent for leadership, Bob ... The country needs young men like you in the leadership of the nation." Byrd recalls that "suddenly lights flashed in my mind! Someone important had recognized my abilities. I was only 23 or 24, and the thought of a political career had never struck me. But strike me that night, it did."[4] He participated in the KKK during World War II, holding the titles Kleagle (recruiter) and Exalted Cyclops. He did not serve in the military during the war, working instead as a welder in a Baltimore, Maryland shipyard, where he helped build warships.

Byrd commented on the 1945 controversy about racially integrating the military. Byrd, when he was 28 years old, wrote to segregationist Senator Theodore Bilbo, of Mississippi, vowing never to serve in such a military:

Rather I should die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds.[5]

hate
they hated LBJ so much nothing else mattered
they hated civil rights and LBJ for supporting it
so much nothing else mattered
even voting for and/or joining the GOP

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_strategy

kkk membership was never the national leadership
byrd was an exception not the rule
the kkk members were the local people, like cops and other workers ie the rednecks

the leadership was in the white citizen councils like asholekkkroft was
those guys told the kkk what to do but never got caught

Just because an individual or group of individuals changes party affiliation, it does not mean they themselves change their political views. If it is true that the Dems in the south were responsible for keeping the black man down on the plantation and a democratic president and northern members of the party want to change that (yes and some republicans as well), one might say that the southen Democrats became Republicans not because they began to think like Republicans, but more as a protest against the party they blamed for selling them out.
