The only thing it "lacks" is a European nameplate. Well, that and some styling. It looks like a cross between a 350Z and a Mitsu Eclipse.

I would probably take the GT-R over a Z06.

IMO, reliability would be the big plus. Relatively big trunk and a back seat are plusses, although it looks like the GT-R's back seat is best suited for humans with no legs.

At that price though, I like the bread and butter 997.

FWIW.

Best,

Kurt

The advantage of the "Datsun" over Vette - no mustache or gold chains required. :)

TerryBPP 10-16-2007 12:52 PM

3.5 0-60. Bull*****. I'll believe it when I see it. Thats as fast as a Aerial Atom.

frogger 10-16-2007 12:56 PM

The few Z06's I've seen on the track are pretty impressive. I think their drivers shaved their mustaches and left the gold chains at home, all in the name of weight reduction. :)

If the demand for S2000's gets any lower it will be non existent. I know the car has fans, but going from the torque of my 928 to an S2000, it felt like it wouldn't bull a greased string out of a cat's ass. I guess they're OK if you can stand keeping the rpms at about 5K ALL THE TIME.

Once again the green one speaks with great wisdom. I've seen the buffoons on the other board refer to them as "the plastic pig." I hate to break it to them but that is one light weight, high speed, low drag pig! Most of the critics couldn't stay in the same zip code as a new Z06.

This got my attention.

The nice thing is that you won't be able to see how ugly it is when you are behind the wheel enjoying it.......

Cheers

I think it could be a cool car. I am not one to jump in the band wagon of bashing the Z06 though. I have driven one, and it was uber fast. The only problem was, it was pretty boring to drive. I wasn't on the track, and driving like a sane person, but if I wanted a really cool car to make the 60 mile interstate work commute in, a Z06 would be near the top of my list. Behind the 911 turbo ofcourse, and maybe the M5.

Apparently GM is coming out with a 650HP blown Corvette "SS" in 09...$100,000. So if the Z06 isn't fast enough for you...

Yea. Not so sure this GT-R qualifies as rice. I mean, at least once you get past your blind hatred of anything Japanese. 0-60 in 3.5 seconds and you say it's RICE?!?! I guess the "rice" label will make you feel better after this thing kicks your ass across the track.

Also, a 997TT is ~$126,900. Way different price league. The 997S, at about the same price, is about 1.1 full seconds slower to 60, and 10 MPH slower at the top end. I'll just take a guess here and say the GT-R will mop it on a track, too.

Twin-Turbo V6 sounds like a lot of fun to drive....

Mule 10-16-2007 01:44 PM

I know Motor Trend sucks but:

Faster than a 911 Turbo, possibly cheaper than a Z06. And now, according to our sources at the scene, Nissan has recorded a stunning seven-minute/35-second lap around the Nurburgring's Nordschleife with a stock 480-horsepower GT-R.

Among production road cars, that's quicker than a Porsche 996 GT2 and Corvette Z06 (both 7:42). It's not as quick as a Koenigsegg CCR, Pagani Zonda F, Porsche 997 GT2, or Porsche Carrera GT, the top four quickest cars around the Green Hell. But, as we went to press, Nissan was working on possibly tackling the record again.

rammstein 10-16-2007 01:45 PM

Dudes-

The Corvette Z06 is a monster. It might be uncomfortable to be seen in it, but I mean, at this point, if I had that kind of loot, and I was going to buy a car new, I'd get a Corvette. Its just too good not to.

The New Nissan has a better rear profile than front. I welcome it.

I don't think 3.5 seconds to 60 is unrealistic for a 450-500 hp car with 4WD traction.

Would that increase even be useable?

I bet the clutch doesn't appreciate that too much though.

Besides, 0-60 times are kind of silly-

The Nurburgring times are pretty insane though.

the 10-16-2007 01:55 PM

0-60 times are kinda interesting because even though you don't normally do all out 0-60 sprints, it is a decent indicator of the car's acceleration ability, power to weight ratio, etc.

Although when you start to get in the 4 second and below range, I'd imagine that the biggest issue, esp. on street tires, is traction, not power.

I just killed a kitten.

My father-in-law takes delivery of one of the first 20 cars off the line, right after the Tokyo motorshow. Might make another trip to Tokyo worthwhile. A blast along the Hakone would be fun.

I actually struggled to decide between picking up my 72, or a 1990-ish R32 GTR (which can now be legally imported into Canada). Two more different cars to cross-shop I can't imagine, but that was the decision I had being a huge fan of both cars.

As for the styling, the GTR has always been somewhere between anonymous and Muscle car mean, I think they got the spirit of the thing right with this car. Nissan has typically underrated the horsepower on the GTR, so its possible that is the case with this one. At any rate, Nissan engineers have said that they over-built the thing, knowing that tuners would increase the boost and get massive horsepower out of it.

Not to mention your wife doesn't have to bleach her hair and undergo boob enhancement surgery...

SlowToady 10-16-2007 05:27 PM

Apparently so, I guess. 0-60 times are supposed to be around or under 3.4s. There's also a possibility that it could weigh LESS than a current Z06.

From what I understand, the powerplant won't be based off the current Z06. (The SS is a 6.2 TT.)

Could be a beast...

0-60 times aren't the best indicator of performance, but they do give an indication of tractable power. What good is 1,000HP if the tires never hook? I'd like to see 0-100 and 40-100 and maybe even 60-120 numbers for any of these cars. I bet they'll be enough to give even the most restrained car guy an erection. I'm also going to bet that the 'Ring times for the Vette SS are going to be excellent...possibly even around the same as the Nissan GT-R?!?!?!

Even if you hate GM, it's hard to hate a Vette. It's almost not even a GM...It's hard to argue with the performance of a Vette.
