Actually it was Lee Trevino.

My bro gave me driver for christmas. I now have a club in my bag that was made in either this decade or the last. A Taylor Made R7 Quad 7.5 degree. I haven't hit it yet, but I bet it goes far.

I just bought a Cleveland Hibore XL 10.5 on ebay. It should be here in a couple of days. I'll let you know how I like it. The specs looked good to me, I'm anxious to try it.

One way I buy drivers and clubs cheap is to go to Golfsmith and buy the head, shaft and grip and make them myself. You can make a helluva driver for around $100, clubs a lot cheaper. If it doesn't work out, cut the shaft, drill out the head and try a different shaft. It's mostly about swing mechanics anyway.

I hear you Sammy. I'm a sore sob the day after I hit the links. I can't throttle back, never could.

Torrey Pines, hehe. Love too!! My brother played the south course a few years back and said to me "You aren't going to be hitting SW into every par 4 on that course". Little does he know I hit an R7 off the tee last month and had a SW into a par 5. It was downwind though. Alright, I'm done beating my chest. Damned internet.
A sand wedge into a par 5 on the second shot...I gotta ask ya exactly how long is that "par 5" where you did that?

Actually, we are going to play Pebble Beach on Friday!

That's the good news...the bad news is that it's at one of those indoor golf places near Madison where you hit into a screen.

Not sure if Torrey Pines is on the list of courses they offer.

Do they put those hand rollers at every green? Isn't that cheating? Seems to me it would be like tapping down spike marks. Or do they just want you to roll behind you after you're done? Maybe that's not what I think it is.

Never really noticed (if they were on every green) and never used one before or after.
Could be there for grounds crew use - that course was VERY well tended.

Score card (online) says 522, not a dogleg, no elevated tee, 10-15 wind at my back. I still made 5.
Knowing how far I've toed one of the R7's prior to, it wasn't much of a shock.

Someone out there take Matt on - I have a hard time believing what you are telling us.

Let me see if I got this straight;

You are on the nuts with a 1 iron
You're average drive is over 300
You are hitting wedges into par 5's (but can only manage par )
You don't play very often
You have a four handicap

Again, not saying you aren't all you say - but I'd have to have confirmation.
Kind of like some of those ams at Pebble, the ones they tell us have a 4 or 6 handicap - then we see them take the loooong way around the course . Well I only watch on sunday now so don't know if Kevin Costner or Kenny G or Kelly Slater didn't outplay their prof. partners the other three days... or even broke 90

Back to the original question for a moment, I think you should try some of the new clubs to see if you like them. You either will, or you won't, I don't think there is much middle ground.

Personally, I can't stand them. I have a very fast, long swing and I feel like I am losing clubhead speed when I hit one of the big clubs. I use an old Taylor Tour metal wood with a 9 degree loft. The thing's probably over 20 years old, I can't even remember when I got it. On a good day, I can hit it 300. If I haven't played in a while, I can't hit it reliably enough to justify pulling it out of the bag. It's my problem, not the club.

I also have a Taylor Tour Cleek, with a 16 degree loft. I can hit that thing about 250, so it is long enough to use off the tee, or out of whatever trouble I might find myself in. It has a really small head which makes it great for shots out of the rough. My favorite, by far.

I can hit a 5 iron 225-230, so I seldom pull out a longer iron. I carry a 2, mainly to use if I end up under a tree and need something to hit really low. Otherwise, it just makes my bag heavier. I can't imagine needing a 1.

Most of the par 5 holes I play are reachable in two, with one of the woods and a 5 iron. Occasionally, I'll play one where I have to hit a driver and the cleek. As I was watching the Accenture Match Play event this last weekend, noticed that the pros were sometimes picking longer irons for a given distance than I would. They might hit a five where I would hit a 6. I got to thinking I ought to try scaling my swing back and not hitting each club as far. I'm betting the more relaxed swing might yield a little better accuracy, which is way more important.

Anybody ever tried that? Did it help you?

JR

I think the best driver out there is Michael Schumacher. He may be a bit pricey tho....

I don't use a driver. I hit my 7 iron about 310 yards. I can reach the green from the tee on most par 5's if I'm hitting my 5 iron crisply. On most par 4's I tee off with a wedge.

I might have to watch that again.
