Often when one of these engines loses some compressor blades they go through the rest of the engine and corn-cobb the rotor.
Since there is a big hole in the compressor section and I don't see any other outer damage, i'd say it is possible that the engine lost an entire compressor disc which exitted the engine radially rather than axially. That is what brought down that plane in iowa, a disc failed due to a metallurgical flaw near the bore and cut through all the hydraulics.

What a great episode that was, both the old one and the newer one in the movie.

A brilliant classic.

Best,

Kurt

According to what my mechanic friend sent me:
You can clearly see the size of the hole in the side of the engine.
There was hardly anything left of the engine blades, it is hard to tell in the
pictures. The inside of the engine was completely black from the fire.
The engine was leaking heavily and the back of the fuselage had 3 huge dents in it from the panel that came off of the engine.
None of the blade particles or debris entered the cabin.

Loved that Twilight Zone. One of the best ever.

"Uncontained failures" are scary - it's a 50/50 chance whether the blade goes through the pressurized fuselage or not. I believe there was a case a few years ago where a fan blade came loose and went through the fuselage, skewering (and instantly killing) a passenger.

Call me paranoid, but it's one of the reasons I typically sit forward of the engine nacelles.

I believe that was a Delta flight around 1996.
