Chris,

Can't beat you in my car. So I thought I would see what a bigger gun costs.

Well, if you want one bad enough, I have a couple extras I could sell you. Here's one, for instance:

There are a few group A M3s running around the US. I seem to recall you could buy one for between $30k and $50k a few years ago. Very quick cars around a track.

There is a guy maybe 10 miles from where I live that has a Mercedes 190 2.3-16 (the prior version of the Benz shown above) rotting away under a pine tree in his driveway. It needs a total restoration and the idiot was wanting around $4,000 for it, as it sat. Bad paint, bad interior, lots of miles and doesn't run. It was tempting...

JR - great looking M3! I don't think you can touch a Grp A/DTM M3 for $50,000 these days. I saw one sell for $175,000 a few months ago.

Got a new plate for mine last year ....

Are you talking about e30 M3's or just e30's in general? The problem I've found is that the vast majority were 'rode hard and put away extremely wet'. I think it's because many were bought new as daily drivers and stayed that way to this day. They are a dime a dozen even the US. You can pickup a decent looking high-mileage driver for $10K. But try to find a low-mile, unmolested, original paint car ... apples and oranges.

I'd love one of those 190 Evo II's! But with only 500 made and none sold in North America they've got to be trading for BIG dollars

I always liked the Alfas from the early 90's ....

JR - Oh, I want one. Almost bought one from Germany about three years ago. That's before the dollar went south. Now I think they're rather untouchable.

Thanks for the offer, though. Maybe in a couple years' time I'll pull the trigger.

Curt - e30 M3s are anything but a dime a dozen out here in L.A. The later M3s are everywhere, and progressively more ugly than sin I might add.

Curt yes I am talking about all of them, and the value is pretty good from what I recall. I would say in the years I was there that I had seen them switch hands (just among the soldiers) several times. Back when the DM was in use the cars were very cheap for Americans to buy, so that killed the value of the cars in a resale perspective however the switch to the euro has dramatically slowed the spending of US Soldiers on high value items such as cars.

Well, dime-a-dozen probably isn't the right phrase I've seen 2 e30 M3's in Michigan. I guess I'm saying you can get on www.s14.net and find the $10K M3's all day long, each with a story of course

Those 190's look big standing alone but are actually quite small, about the same size as the M3. Look how small it looks to the Audi here (I believe that is Michael Schumacher in the Karcher MB who did a one-off drive in 91).

And believe it or not, there were some Mustangs running in the series at one time

Nowadays the cars are kind of like Front-engined-CART-cars, or maybe NASCAR COTS chassis with CART engines in them. Somehow they leave me a little cold. I've always liked the mid-80's to mid-90's DTM cars because they had more individual character.

I peered into one of those DTM cars...they have almost nothing common with original. Nada. They are like F1 cars with roof. Carbon fibre, sequential transmission, enourmous brakes 10000 RPM etc.

John - I know what you're saying but I'd hesitate to use NASCAR COT and DTM in the same sentence! Those COT cars are truly horrible cookie-cutter spec cars. The DTM cars - while far, far removed from the street versions - are at least completely individual in design.
