I am getting more and more pleased with this race.
The candidates I personally found unacceptable are gone or going. Guiliani (guessing he bows out and endorses McCain), Thompson (Fred who?), Huckabee (seems he will stay in long enough to sabotage Romney). Edwards and Paul will soldier on for awhile, but aren't really a factor (unless it becomes a delegate-trading convention, I guess). As it stands, the next President will be Romney, McCain, Clinton or Obama. I would be okay with any of them, not to say I don't have a preference but none of them would give me nightmares of Bush redux.

Very likely. Giuliani was the only candidate fooling himself that 9/11 is still an issue. It's been nearly eight years.

If you look at the Super Tuesday landscape, it's clear that McCain will be the Republican nominee. God willing, he should be able to defeat either Billary or Obama.

I don't believe McCain really has much support from independents. A lot of those who vote for him are Dems and I'm not even sure they really like him. The media want us to believe that McCain is the man. They love his campaign finance law because it gives the media greater control of the message of criticizing politicians while limiting parties' and challengers' abilities to do the same. And they know that McCain would have a very hard time getting the GOP base to show up to vote for him, which helps the Dems. I'm not much of a conspiracy theory believer, but this is definitely a case of the media pushing the Republican they think will be easiest to beat.

If McCain picks the right running mate, it will make all the difference.

BTW, here's a blurb I wrote on McCain that got into the Wash. Post a while back. They heavily edited it and grilled me on the phone beforehand.

I don’t think Romney stands much of a chance in a general election. These observations come from some social time with those I work letting juniors express themselves freely plus trips to the Pan handle and Tampa.
One is those I associate with vary in age and background. One thing they have in common is an almost pathological Pavlovian distrust for businessman running a war bases on charts, etc. This is experience from the current VP and previous SecDef plus historical. The other thing that seriously upsets these folks is Romney’s serious anti-gun bias and his inability to even BS about due his lack of knowledge. The attitude is that while McCain is bad we may as well go whole hog and really screw things up with one of the Democrats. I personally believe that the Republican “elite” while really disliking McCain (and with good reason) do not understand the vehemence that Romney engenders due to these two issues, at least among the majority of those I associate with. The immigration issue makes McCain unelectable, IMO. Especially with a bleeding-heart liberal Congress that doesn't know how to do anything other than borrow money and hand it out to people who don't deserve it.
Bad combination. Heck, I suspect I'd just abstain from the election entirely if it ended up being McCain versus either Clinton or Obama. Or maybe I'd just write-in Rammstein.

I would agree, except that this won't be a point of differentiation between McCain and the Dem nominee. They'll both agree 100% on this issue. Maybe driver's licenses for illegals would come up, but that should not be a federal issue anyway.

First you demand that the threat of terrorism is no longer an issue --'foolish to be concerned about'-- THEN you imply that it is still an issue (in order to blame Bush). Too funny. ...and kind of sad.
