ID your handicap?

I see to many people jumping out of their cars, running to the stores and sporting a handicap license plate. Whats up? I want the states to start identifying the problem on the plate, if your in a wheelchair then you should have that symbol, missing an arm, show that, if your just too old have a pic of some old wrinkled up face on it, if your too fat, well? if your crazy let see the straight jacket?

Any problems??

As long as there's a symbol for "It's my Grandma's car."

Halfway through my meal a car pulls up into one of the handicapped spots, and four women get out. All in their twenties, all healthy, all dressed in the same sort of medical style uniform. All of them below average looks.

The car doesn't have handicapped plates, but there is a handicapped blue sign hanging from the inside mirror.

Now I'm not a fan of government mandated handicapped spaces (I'd rather let free enterprise work that one out). I'm even more annoyed with people who use these that have no visible physical handicaps.

The healthy foursome walk down the sidewalk and enter a different restaurant. I finish my lunch over the next 20 minutes. I say goodbye to my friend and walk out... And look at the car... Check the rear plate: standard.

I have been challenging myself recently to not be such a pussy, and to be more assertive. I think: I'm going to find this group and confront them on their parking in the handicapped spot.

I walk into the adjacent restaurant and I'm greeted by the host. I ignore him, look around and spy the foursome... Actually now it's 10 women all wearing the same outfit, all crammed elbow to elbow into this space designed for about six people. The hottest girl there was maybe a 5.

With an aggressive, assertive and righteous demeanor I walk up and say, "Is anyone here handicapped?"

The girl who was driving says, "Yeah, me."

I'm thinking-- Yeah, right. I tell her about how my sister has a friend with MS, and they are always having problems finding handicapped spaces because people are parking in them who don't really have handicaps...

The girl now says, "I've got cancer."

The table goes deadly quiet as does whole restaurant. I can hear the crickets in the field nearby. Not one, not two, not three, but all TEN girls are staring at me with daggers in their eyes. I feel the blood drain from my face as I turn a ghostly white.

I look at her and eek out... "Well, ahhh... Good luck with that."

I make a hasty retreat out the door and to my car.

How's that for public humiliation?

We don't have alot of Handicap drivers/plates here. Most of the spots sit empty.

I was just a boy when my Dad explained to me NEVER park in a HC spot and be thankful that you could walk. Regardless of the time of day or speed of my stop; I don't ever park in a HC spot. I can't stand it when I see people doing it either. I just think........ Karma baby!

Multiple Sclerosis isn't always visible...Cindy uses her windshield placard on "bad" days...when the fatigue factor is huge, yet she must go out. Also, people with other problems not readily visible...bad ticker, etc. Don't be so quick to judge.

Oregon has voluteers who check the tags...the car license plate checked...$500 fine to cheaters.

I thought handicapped people wanted to be treated like everyone else.

I can't spell to save my life. And my handwriting would have to improve to be as bad a doctor's scratching on a prescription pad.

But my legs work just fine (knock on wood) so no parking sticker for me, despite other handicaps.

My main handicap is my tendency to make Paul angry. But I have hope. . . .

My wife is 30 and super hot (no pics) and has had MS for 8 years now and you would never know it. Yes some days she has fatigue issues but at this moment, she wouldn't consider getting a pass (but she could). I hope she never needs one!! Her Mom on the other hand is in advanced stages and has one.

Your right though - dont be so quick to judge.

Ewave's story is a good one but honestly, even if a person has cancer or some other disease, the standard should be whether or not it adversely affects them to the point where they need to park closer to a building.

Seriously. If I had cancer, I wouldn't use the handicap placard unless I was so run-down from chemo or whatever that I felt I needed it. Cancer patient or not, if you can walk and function well enough to be able to work, you don't need it.

I read a letter into Dear Abby or Ann Landers about this subject once. The guy wrote in who had Muscular dystrophy. He said he was young and worked out to try to counter act the effects of the disease as much as possible. The result was that he looked really healthy, but had very poor stamina, and a long walk would leave him exhausted. So, his disease left him in a state where a long walk was bad for him, but he didn't look like he should need a tag. He said that he was verbally accosted all of the time.

On the opposite side of the coin, we had a justice of the peace here in Houston get caught renewing the handicapped placard for her mother. The thing is, her mother had been dead for 6 years. Judge Betty Brock Bell.

I've noticed ALOT more handicapped plates here in Michigan over the past couple of years. My first thought is that they took the buyout from GM/Delphi and then "became" disabled.

Ok, ok, don't shoot me. My Mom is classified as disabled and has a placard even though she shows no outside symptoms. Obviously, others are in similar positions.

It is not easy to get a handicapped sticker in Oregon. My mom had one in La. When I moved her up here, she wanted one. But her doctor said, he'd rather force her to walk a little. She was always pretty stoic or spartan but told him it hurt. He said, yes, I know - it's good for you. No sticker.

And apparently if a doc dispense too many stickers, the state medical Bd. asks him why...

hey I need a handicap plate. I'm in worse shape than 99% of the people with handicap plates. I cut the nerves that control my right foot. can't raise my foot, not even the toes. walk with a limp and in pain 24hrs a day, terribly underweight since the cancer and get dizzy and out of breath. chances are that I'm cut and bleeding somewhere most days. partial use of my foot, not quite full use of an arm and usually dragging for lack of food and lack of sleep. don't think I could get one though. it seems almost everyone parking in the handicap spots have brand new luxury cars. don't think I would be allowed to park my old truck next to the caddys, lincolns, escalades and bmws. that and since I walk kind of slow, I'd get in the way as they park in front and run inside. the only actually handicapped guy I know has no legs, rides a wheelchair and parks way out near the end of the parking lot as I do
