This day, August 18th, seventy five years ago, was dubbed, "The Hardest Day" of the Battle of Britain. This was the day when the Luftwaffe threw everything at South and East England in an effort to break the R.A.F.

Though not operationally ready on the Hardest Day, these guys were the most successful Fighter Command unit during the Battle of Britain:

Now for the trivia; who were they?

I would guess that they were a Polish unit. They had lost their country and knew exactly what that meant. There is a particular bond between the UK and Poland that persists to this day. Due mostly to the bravery of those men who defended our islands with the same passion and tenacity as if they were their own.

Random.

Yes, that was 303 Polish, they destroyed more enemy aircraft than any other Allied Unit during the Battle of Britain. Their story of how they got to Great Britain is also quite a tale of determination. Loved by their British comrades, yet sold out at Yalta by the allies.

What one country was not represented by so much as a single pilot flying in the victory fly over above London ?

AND they couldn't go back to their country and were treated as pariahs lest they make uncle joe angry

Purse Seinger Fishing

Purse Seiner Salmon Fishing in a bay near Ketchikan in Alaska...........for scale, those are ~55' foot boats, and the Pink Chum Salmon are in thick.

I'm sure all the captains and crews have friendly a group hug at the end of the day.
