Finally there are the Kongbang II/III class hovercraft, capable of transporting 40-plus troops at speeds of 40-50 knots. The most modern ships in the North Korean People痴 Navy, they are equipped with radars, Gatling guns, and surface-to-air missiles. A handful of Kongbang hovercraft are equipped with anti-ship cruise missiles, 57mm cannon and 30mm autocannon, to take on South Korean Navy ships. North Korea has 130 hovercraft, and according to the authoritative KPA Journal, the 砺ast majority� are believed the be Kongbang II/III class.

IHS Jane's reported in February 2011 that North Korea had built a hovercraft base 1.5 km south of the town of Sasulp'o in South Hwanghae Province, which hosts forward elements of the Korean People's Navy (KPN) West Sea Fleet sniper brigade.

North Korea's suspected photoshopping of images showing an amphibious hovercraft landing has raised a number of tantalising questions about what the regime in Pyongyang is up to.

The Atlantic magazine was the first to raise the alarm and since then a number of news agencies have removed the offending image, which shows eight hovercraft, or air-cushion vehicles (ACVs), in various stages of attack. As faked images go, the photo in question is reasonably innocuous: a subsequent, apparently undoctored image shows a total of six ACVs on the beach with troops dismounted and moving inland.

The image is likely of the North Korean Kongbang-class hovercraft.

IHS Jane's believes Pyongyang has about 130 of these in a number of variants, which are based on commercial technology sourced from the British, 1960s-era SR. N6 Winchester-class hovercraft.
