In this case its easy... the power plant ('the Double Mamba) is actually two engines, in each case a Mamba gas turbine, that drives it own prop.

The Gannet is a twin engined aircraft with each engine driving its own prop and there is no interlinkage between the two.

The 'rear' engine could be started using its prop as it windmilled in the airflow generated by the front engine and its prop...

The interesting bit is that both engines drive a prop on the same axis.

This is a counter rotating propellor assembley, not a contra rotating propellor.

I may be wrong, but I think the information you are seeking has to do with the concentric prop shafts.

Imagine the shaft driving the rear propeller is hollow and open in the back end. That shaft is driven by a gear. A second shaft is fitted inside that one and sticks out farther in front. The leading propeller is attached to the inside shaft.

This Gannet is at the Yorkshire Air Museum. The big 4 engine beast in the background is a Halifax bomber.

To further expand on the concept:

Contra-rotating propellers, also referred to as coaxial contra-rotating propellers, apply the maximum power of usually a single piston or turboprop engine to drive two propellers in opposite rotation

Its a bit more definitive than this...

The term contra-rotating prop is only correct if both props are driven from a singl engine.

If each prop is driven by a separate engine (as in the Gannet) then the term used is counter-rotating props.

The Gannet prop is simply two independent props that are mounted one behind the other and its odd to see a Gannet fly (back in the day!) with one prop stopped.
