Dual plug flat 12?
Exhaust on top leads me to think it's the Mercedes M291.

Wow - are those exhausts on top? I figured they were some kind of fancy plenum's. I seem to remember seeing an "upside down" water cooled airplane engine over at Planes of Fame many years ago - it had the heads on the bottom and the crankcase on top.

I won't disagree about the "flat" opinion, but I didn't have it figured for a flat. IT's definitely a dual plug 12 though.

Diesel Beetle

Volkswagen actually commissioned an air-cooled, flat-four, Beetle based diesel from its regular future projects supplier-Porsche-way back in 1951. This was given project number 508 and carried to the level of two test vehicles. It even provided vital strength data for Porsches own 1.3/1.5 crankcase, but it would be 1981 before the public learned of this decidedly different VW engine

The white pipes look to be exhaust; so the curved ones are induction.

That would be a V-12 Ferrari. Looks like David Piper's car. It's an engine from the mid to late 60's, found in the P3, 412P and P4 cars. It's fuel injected, has 4 cams, and dual plugs per cylinder. It happens to be the finest sounding engine ever created.

A few years ago, I was attending the car festivities in Carmel/Monterrey in August and happened to be out early one morning, running the 17 mile highway loop, before breakfast. There was a 412P being auctioned that year in one of the big auctions. I happened to pull off at scenic spot to take a few pictures for the wife. Off in the distance, I heard the 412P. A prospective buyer was getting a demo ride and they passed me at full chat. The noise that thing made on the overrun was worth my left nut. Do anything you can to hear one in anger.

I read somewhere that Ferry actually had one of those flat-4 diesels in a 356 coupe for a little while
