Frederick Lanchester — An untold history of Aeronautics & Aerodynamics
https://medium.com/@anthonyhughes_6435/frederick-lanchester-an-untold-history-of-aeronautics-aerodynamics-d77b582d16f4

Quote:
Frederick Who?

Frederick Lanchester (1868–1946)was an English engineer/ inventor. He was, by any definition a polymath — a creative genius also ahead of his time and often struggling to get the ‘establishment’ to catch up or take notice.

Apart from inventing pretty much everything in modern day cars (disc breaks, power steering, 4 wheel drive, suspension systems, worm drive, turbo charging, the first petrol-electric hybrid car etc — oh and we have the terms Top Gear and Dashboard courtesy of Fred) he also worked on pioneering inventions in colour photography, the first outboard motor boat, electric sound amplification and powered flight for which he publishing the theories of Aerodoneticsand Aerodynamics that would inform the basic principles of these areas of research, development and industry we know today. Indeed just one glance at his design for the powered flight aircraft with contra-rotating propellers in 1897! compared to the other designs for airplanes, will demomstrate the true nature of his vision and just how ahead of his times he really was (More of that later)

That typo spelling error kind of sullies an otherwise fine article doesn't it?

EARTHMOVER slides downhill 1/2 a mile..........with 500 feet airborne at the end.

That had to make a helll of a noise.

If you've ever been to So Cal between October and February, there's a good chance you've encountered the hot winds out of the east - locally called Santa Ana winds. Normal winds here are off the Pacific ocean flowing west to east, but during Fall and Winter the high pressure and warm air from the high desert surpasses our normal ocean breezes, and havoc quite often ensues. As the humidity often drops to near zero this is a dangerous time for wild fires, and any empty big rigs are especially vulnerable to the gusts.

This guy got away pretty lucky. The gust knocked him from east to west, and absent the guardrail he'd have been toast...

Just A Car Guy: Peugeot

Quote:
Way back in 1927!

Banville's symbol race where several thousand people in Paris went racing in a new and gigantic garage in the neighborhood, eight floors high and three or four floors below ground, all accessed by ramps.

Spectators hung out in the turns and at each landing, and also on the steps of the stairs and in the offices that give it an elegant feel of a major sporting event.

At the top, in a spacious tennis court were tables of cakes, small ovens, and champagne were waiting for guests................

..........included motorcycles, cyclecars, racing cars and Bugatti, Delage, Amilcar, Seneschal, Talbot, Peugeot, etc.,.............

It ended, without incident or accident.
