Nope, not YF-12's. There were only 3 built, and those aren't them. The nose was different (to house the radar). They're not A-12's, either...since none of them had USAF markings. In that lot, you can see an SR-71B, trainer aircraft. They are in their raw titanium finish, sans black paint.

They appear to have only 1 canopy (except the trainer), while the Blackbirds had two, one for each crewmember?

you are correct. the AF markings threw me. the raw finish was an A-12 trademark. looking back through my book, that picture was taken in 1964 at Groom Lake. they are A-12's. One of my professors in college was a Habu pilot. Lots of great stories.

One of my Christmas Presents this year was "Lockheed Blackbird: Beyond the Secret Missions" by Crickmore. I think it is the third edition. I have not had a chance to start reading it yet but I look forward to it.
Here's a different aircraft picture: ![]() Camarillo Airshow 2011_ 493 by Max_911S_fahrer, on Flickr

What a behimuth of a butt ugly airplane with very limited airports that can service it.
Now THIS Boeing's New Airplane - 747-8 is an airplane. For the 8th straight year, the 747 has been voted the best aircraft type in the world Global Traveler Announces 8th Annual Reader Survey Award Winners - Global Traveler Magazine and can be serviced by most all major airports. The A380 came in 7th in aircraft type. Not that I'm biased, but... |
