The design of the ship was so intriguing to me I had to look it up:

Ulstein: Seven Viking Nominated as Ship of the Year 2013 (VIDEO)
http://www.offshoreenergytoday.com/ulstein-seven-viking-nominated-as-ship-of-the-year-2013-video/

Quote:
The vessel incorporates the X-BOW® hull line design to reduce motion in transit and give increased stability in the rough weather that can be expected in the North Sea.

I still don't see another image of the square hole in the bottom the submersible inspection robot was looking at in the video.

http://www.marineinsight.com/naval-architecture/x-bow-hull-design-vs-conventional-hull-design/

Quote:
The X bow hull design ships provides smoother movement of the ship with less slamming, which also makes living and working environment on the vessel better and reduces the chances of cargo shifting. According to a study, X bow design reduces the movement of the ship by almost 20% even in the roughest seas. A ship with an X bow design can thus easily sail through heavy waves with better speed and less movement. Opinions taken from seafarers who have worked with X Bow reflect much better living and operating conditions. Some of the officer even mentioned that unlike in ships with conventional bows, speed in X bow ships didn’t require to be reduced when facing rough sea weather.

I marked up this detail according to that video, but cannot find more on this feature - yet.

My employer was hell bent on switching from Freightliners to Peterbilts. Then 8 of these showed up. I guess Peterbilt couldn't deliver any new trucks until July, seems odd.

My dad was trained to fly the P-47 and had a lot of interesting stories.

One was how they had brought a bunch of beat up P-40's back from China... and they let him and his buddies fly them.

Think about that for a minute... letting a bunch of 18 year old kids fly around in P-40's!

Isn't that just for launching the ROV on that crane arm?

Blue one is a 2015 KW we got new last winter. The red one is a 2014 KW hold over that we got new this summer.

The arm might be for that (over the side), but the video shows a "WELL" (I called it a HOLE).

If recovery was of an underwater object in rough seas I'd want to control the listing motions and have any possible rotational forces center-lined, and not over the side. The well provides for this worst case condition found in the North Sea.

I'm guessing you haven't watched the video yet. I don't know how to do screen-shots, but I do have a hand held camera.

The Stills:

I don't know if or how they close off the well when not in use.

The bow thrusters do look like they are retractable, not a cheap solution but top notch.

I have spent a lot of time on this ship as well.

The designers really pulled off form and function.

They bought 40 Pete's at once last summer. Mostly 579's. Those new Volvos come standard with some type of auto shift transmission.

Some of these too.
