1960 Plymouth XNR Concept Drive - Motor Trend Classic

Quote:
In the late 1940s, Detroit’s wild automotive fantasies reflected America’s unbridled postwar exuberance. Inspired by jet aircraft and rockets, “dream cars” sprouted tailfins and even vestigial wings. But Chrysler Corporation emphasized engineering prowess over styling. Practical, staid, and slow, its Plymouth division competed head-to-head with Ford and Chevrolet.

Features from Exner’s stunning show cars morphed into Chrysler production cars. ..............

We (engineers at Compaq and outside consultants) designed, built (some of it), raced and won with this car in 2001.
Two cars race at a time.
Two people push each car for 60 feet, then coast down Sand Hill Rd. in Menlo Park CA.
Speed at the end of the push ~22mph, speed at the end of the course ~43mph.
The competition was fairly serious, some teams had professional bob-sled pushers.
The car is still in good shape, stored waiting for another race.

Yeah, Rick is one of the nicest guys I know up there. Friendly, willing to talk to anyone and humble. I've been watching planes roll from his shop since 2000. What is more amazing is the fact it's a solo operation. Just him doing all of that work.

Air&Space did an article on the Howard line. It was neat to see Rick mentioned about one of his fine restorations, which cost more than our house......

Rick and several other KPVF locals fly over to Wings at Auburn, KAUN for lunch on Fridays, weather permitting. I would always call them the Friday lunch bunch. As they would return, our home is directly under their flight paths as they would come in for a mid-field entry into the downwind. I am always amazed how fast those Howards would fly at. Big airframe and big radial was a very good combo. Big fuel burn too.

The World’s First Supersonic Private Jet Just Landed its First Order
The World’s First Supersonic Private Jet Just Landed its First Order | Fortune.com

Quote:
After 13 years of developing a high-speed business jet on paper, billionaire-backed Aerion Corporation is a big step closer to making supersonic passenger travel a reality again. The company—funded by both Texas billionaire Robert Bass and European aerospace giant Airbus —just inked its first order for 20 of the $120 million jets.

If Aerion can execute an ambitious timeline unveiled last week, its AS2 could be in the air in just five years, with first commercial deliveries beginning in 2023. That would make the jet the first passenger aircraft designed for trans-sonic travel—at speeds both above and below the sound barrier—since the retirement of the iconic Concorde in 2003.

Aerion AS2 | Business Jet Traveler

Quote:
Laminar flow involves the air next to the wing. At supersonic speeds it can flow smoothly, free of turbulence, with less drag on the wings, resulting in better speed, range, and fuel economy—but only if the airplane’s design takes advantage of it by eliminating drag-inducing things such as highly swept wings. If you look at the renderings of the AS2 on these pages, you’ll see that the wings are short, thin, and stubby. That’s to benefit from supersonic natural laminar flow....................

Dimensionally, the AS2’s cabin is a different cat. While its maximum height is just over six feet and its maximum width is seven and a half feet, those dimensions aren’t uniform; supersonic aerodynamics mean that the fuselage has to have a non-constant cross-section. There will be more room in the aft half of the cabin, but as you move forward the fuselage tapers.................

For now, Aerion continues development work with Airbus and is searching for a manufacturing and flight-test location—some place with a long runway, near an ocean. The company hopes to be flying the first prototype by 2021. The wait to go fast is going to last a little longer.
http://www.fiddlersgreen.net/models/aircraft/Lockheed-F104.html

Quote:
Before deliveries of the Starfighter could begin, unexpected problems arose which required an intensive test program. Among these was the tendency of the aircraft to stabilize in a stalled condition-now called super stall. In this condition, the plane remains pitched up in a stalled attitude from which recovery is impossible. This flaw was corrected in April 1957.................

When it made its appearance, the first prototype bore a strong resemblance to a Lockheed-designed research missile, the X-7. In fact, the XF-104 owed a great deal of its design to the X-7 vehicle.
