What makes it so easy? The sub’s fixed positive buoyancy removes the need for adjusting ballast or managing drop weights. Six 400-rpm, 1.2-kilowatt ducted propellers – two front and four rear — provide easy omnidirectional movement and stand-still hovering, and it’s possible for either person to act as pilot with intuitive, fly-by-wire controls.

Train built in 1966 using two jet engines is still the fastest locomotive in America
Train built in 1966 using two jet engines is still the fastest locomotive in America | Daily Mail Online

Quote:
Don Wetzel, an engineer for the New York Central Railroad, was given the task in the mid-1960s of trying to make trains safer, less expensive and faster.

His solution: strap two jet engines to the roof of a locomotive and see what happens.

What happened was Wetzel created the first jet-powered train that even to this day is the fastest locomotive in America.

I read it as an "X-Shaped" 12 cylinder (4-stroke) with the supercharger powered by a gas turbine - nuts hey?

Not much about that diagram makes a lot of sense to me. Probably just part of a Russian disinformation campaign.

This would have to be a Diesel, right?

How do they typically supercharge Diesels?

Not Typical:

Of course there are some extremely large engines out there but nothing we’ve seen has shocked and awed as much as Harrah’s V24-71 Detroit Diesel “Big Mike” engine. This brute of a semi engine is rated at over 3,000hp and makes use of 12 (yes, you read that right) 871 blowers and nitrous to get the job done.

I see no real advantage to adding an additional turbine engine to spin a supercharger, it would be expensive, complex, and consume more fuel than simply using a conventional crankshaft driven supercharger and increasing the engine displacement if even more power is needed. People tried all kinds of crazy stuff, particularly in the crossover era between piston and turbine aircraft engine development. If you can think of it, somebody has likely tried it, and if it never achieved commercial use, it probably didn't work.

Type 97 ShinHoTo Chi-Ha
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Type_97_ShinHoTo_Chi-Ha

Quote:
The Type 97 ShinhoTo Chi-Ha was a Japanese medium tank used in World War II that was an upgrade to the original Type 97 Chi-Ha. The new version was designated Type 97-Kai ("improved") or Shinhoto Chi-Ha ("new turret" Chi-Ha). This design was probably the best tank Japan produced in any large quantity up to 1945.......................

While vulnerable to opposing Allied tanks (US M3 Lee/British M3 Grant, M4 Sherman and Soviet T-34), the 47 mm high-velocity gun did give the Type 97 ShinHoTo a fighting chance against them. The 47 mm gun was effective against light tanks and against the sides and rear of the Sherman tank.[7]

George,
I am no Diesel mechanic. From what I understand the two stroke Detroit Diesel uses a low compression two stroke like an 8-71 configuration. The supercharger is gear driven and force fed by a turbo to help boost compression

That makes sense, I think I've read about those.

Regarding the alleged gas turbine powered supercharger of the future Russian tank, my search the other day did have a hit with something similar in use at a stationary power-plant, first kind in the world it claimed.

More than one way to skin a cat, but if you are putting in a gas turbine/generator into a tank why not just do it like the Abrams tank and be done with it?

Detroit diesels are a very odd beast; 2-stroke design - incorporating piston-port intake and camshaft operated exhaust valves. The supercharger is driven 1:1 relative to crankshaft speed and assists in moving the intake air more efficiently but does not really pressurize it. It does have high compression.

In its day - it was the ***** diesel engine as far as power-to-weight and wide rpm range. They were used in everything from Oliver tractors to stationary engines to over the road semi's to locomotives. Also in marine form was all aluminum unlike any of of its counter-parts then making it the only choice for marine power. That's why you see so many old mid-to large boats having them as OE power.

The inline and larger 'V' configurations all had 71 ci per cylinder - same bore and stroke regardless of how many cylinders. The smaller 'V' engines cylinders displaced 53 ci - same bore and stroke.

The fuel systems were a then 'new' technology called 'Rising-Rate' fuel pressure to mechanically match fuel delivery to demand and RPM. This reduced heavy smoke and excess fuel consumption at high load and low engine speeds.

Later - turbo's were added to actually pressurize the incoming air charge for far more HP / TQ. When people see the Turbo / Supercharger combo as in the pic above it looks really high-tech and exotic until you understand the supercharger is just helping to move the air into the cylinders and turbo is pressurizing it.

Lastly and perhaps most interesting is the Roots design supercharger was initially used to help ventilate coal mine shafts! They were driven by a variety of things including electric motors and only much later incorporated to make power improvements in combustion engines.

Old school Trucks with Detroit diesels definitely had a unique sound to them. Nowadays everything is choked out with DPF's, SCR's and DEF.

My very own DPF, recently baked.

Lots of interesting information/history in the link below.

Abarth Ascending

Quote:
The remarkable Cisitalia/Porsche Project 370, a drawing for a V8 in GT form. A Berlina was also designed. The V8 was to be a 2 liter DOHC with an alternative flat 8 on the boards. Dusio put the time and money into the Grand Prix car instead. Click to enlarge.
I'm crazy about that design, I've never seen it before.

Sort of like a flattened and widened Type 64, complete with covered front wheels.

I was just mentioning the tech is there so you can attach whatever projectile launcher you want.

Even one of these:
