When I was 13 years old back in 1973 I had the idea of arms at the side of a hovercraft that would explosively swing down and enable the hovercraft to jump or hop over dry land (to get over a trench or gully). Worked a little different than Speed Racer's car, but same idea.

As one gets older one realizes that if you want to jump over something all you have to do is get a ramp or ride on a horse. It kind of sucks getting old and losing some of your imagination in exchange for pragmatism.

ExoMars 2016 has been sent on its way to Mars on Monday after a day-long ascent mission atop a Proton-M/Briz-M launch vehicle taking the heaviest craft to visit Mars three times around planet Earth before being injected onto its Trans-Martian Trajectory...................

The multi-billion Euro ExoMars project is a collaboration between the European Space Agency and the Roscosmos State Corporation for a pair of missions – the first in 2016 to fly an orbiter and landing demonstrator to Mars, and the second in 2018 or 2020 to deliver a rover and instrumented lander to the surface to look for signatures of past and present life as the first mission with this explicit goal. ..............

Initially starting out as a project between ESA and NASA, the mission went through a number of designs of different orbiter and rover combinations before it became clear that the U.S. could not finance its side of the project. ESA and Roscosmos then partnered up for the two ExoMars missions, also leading to the switch to the Proton rocket.....................

..................lasting until Briz-M was over central Kazakhstan, from where it had launched four hours earlier................

The seven-month journey of the ExoMars spacecraft will first take the vehicle through detailed testing operations, powering up and checking out the instruments, before a major Deep Space Maneuver occurs around July 28 to set ExoMars on its final course towards Mars.

I don't recall the press gushing all over that 2016 event.

Underneath the craft, whilst on jacks. Again a rare experience, this shows one of the seven hydraulic jack rams raised. .......

The rubber pad onto which the jack ram (rusty) is placed. This is one of the seven landing pads underneath the SRN4 - on landing it didnt sit on the skirt or even have a metal-to-ground contact. Instead it was placed down on these giant rubber biscuits, engineered to be the strongest points of the craft's structure.

History

First successful experiments with hovercraft in the USSR date back to the mid-1930s and are tightly connected with the name of a talented engineer and designer Vladimir Levkov, who substantiated the possibility of hovercraft as far back as in 1925 in his treatise named The vortex theory of the rotor (Russian: Вихревая теория ротора). In 1934 the L-1 hovercraft boat which is sometimes referred to as the first hovercraft boat in the world was designed and built in his laboratory, with the L-5 fast-attack boat soon to follow. It became obvious that there was a great potential in further development of this technology of transportation.
