Sherwin Williams paint any good?

Small paint job at hand and after stumbling onto this coupon I figure I may give it a try over Benjamin Moore.

Thoughts?

Here's a cached image of the coupon as well: http://72.14.205.104/search?q=cache:XwYDPbGYmVEJ:baton.com/common/sherwin.html+http://baton.com/common/sherwin.html&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=1&gl=us&client=firefox-a

There are several grades of SW, I think the middle grade is equal to BM.

I knew a professional painter and that was the only brand he would use.

He painted my wood house with it and it still looks good ten years later (sold that house but I drive by occasionally)

I've always been a Dunn-Edwards guy. You get a discount for AAA (auto club) and ask them about a contractors discount if you buy there in quantity and frequency. I think it's 25%

Much better than your Home Depot stuff.

Once you start applying you will see where that extra money went.

Worth it IMHO, we have one up the block and use them.

Rick, shoot me an email or PM before you go to the paint store.

I'll set up a deal for you. I'll help you pick out the right paint as well.

I will need the exact store info - phone number will be best.

Sherwin-Williams' "Duration" is by far the best imo, and is the only one I will use. It isn't cheap (approx. $50 per gallon), but holds up far better than any other, and my time is more valuable than the cost of the paint. "Duration" (excluded from your discount I see ) is also a lot better than S-W's other offerings, but they are OK too.

My brother and I use SW almost exclusively on rental properties and projects. I wouldn't pay retail prices for their stuff, but with a discount, it's definitely worth the money. The Duration exterior line is great, because you can get one-coat coverage on most surfaces. This saves a good bit on labor. The equivalent interior paint (rated for one-coat) is S-W Super Paint, as far as I know.

gr8fl4porsche, how good is your discount? After I select paint colors, I'll be ready for paint. The fresh drywall is getting one coat of SW601 High-Build with tint. Plan was to topcoat with Super Paint. Ceilings will get flat white Promar 400. Am I heading in the right direction?

DE is good paint, but it's a west coast company. They've never heard of them in NJ. I've applied thousands of gallons of it.

SW is good paint. As others have pointed out, they sell 3 or 4 different grades in most of the products, I've used the 2nd to bottom one with fine results and coverage + all of their upper range paints. Good to fantastic products and great support from their stores and reps.

Believe it or not, Consumer Reports is a good source for info on paint, they do some pretty extensive "real world" tests as well as chemical analysis to determine how much of the *expensive stuff* like titanium is in each paint. Dollars spent does not always= quality. Big surprise, I know.

Talk to any 10 quality painters and you will hear 10 brands that are the best. The fact is that in most cases, if you buy the best grade paint within any particular brand, you will get a good paint.

I have painted many a ceiling without any drop cloths by spending the money on a high end ceiling white/

I made the mistake of buying the crappy Behr paint at Home Depot once for a rental property of mine. I will not make that mistake again.

I too have had good luck with Sherwin Williams paints.

You ever notice how many people call that company SHERMAN Williams? Must be for Jewish painters, I guess.

Buddy of mine is a former painter, and his dad owns a painting company. They exclusively used the higher grade of SW products, but claimed that the budget product lines were crap. I've used a lot of different paints over the years, and found the top-shelf Behr stuff from Home Depot to be very good. As much as I hate the Home Depot, I can't find anything better for $22/gal. Also ranked highly in Consumer Reports.

No matter the brand, I always buy the top product line when it comes to paint. Normally it's significantly better, giving you a better paint job with fewer hassles.

I'm a commercial painting contractor - good prices / we use lots of SW.
Send me a PM before you buy and I'll set you up.

SW's High Build primer is the best on the market when you are spraying. Do not backroll. Lay it on as heavy as possible without runs. It will hang almost 15mils wet. Try 2 coats if you are not comfortable spraying. SuperPaint is fine. 400 on ceilings is perfect unless they carry a line call Sher Scrub - try that one. Duration Home Satin is nice for high use rooms without a lot of windows - use flat for high light areas.

I have used every major brand. We honestly don't care which brand is spec'd. They all have good - better - best. All are competitively priced with each other. If I take quotes on a large job, penny's / gal is usually the diff.

On a tight job where an extra coat here and there may cost 10's of thousands of $$, I may use 3-4 different brands to get results.
I may like one companies primer, anothers topcoat, anothers trim paint and anothers accent colors. But thats when I am trying to obtain very specific results.

I been using SW for my home remodel. I think I've been getting their 400. I tried some Valspar from Lowes and was impressed for the price. I may switch to that since it seemed as good and was a lot cheaper.

Such a timely topic. I just recently had my entire cedar house exterior painted and it's new addition interior with Sherwin Williams paint. First off, if your a Consumer Reports follower, they absolutely HATE Sherwin Williams paint, giving it the lowest mark on their list along with its very high price.

http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/home-garden/home-improvement/paints-stains/exterior-paint/interior-and-exterior-sub/ratings-interior/index.htm

I've painted the entire interior of my 2 story house and I like Behr paint by far as the best. It generally is rated near the top of CR, but that is not why I started using it. The biggest advantage to this paint is that is is truely a "one coat" paint if the conditions are right. It seems to be thicker also and less splatter. The contractor painted the addition used SW paint and I had to repeatedly ask that numerous rooms be repainted because I could visible see where the coverage was thin. SW paint is the contractors and professions friend and I think they get good discounts there as opposed to Lowes or Home Depot. The top three paints over the past years according to CR are from Home Depot, Lowes, and Walmart. You pay a premium at SW, which is why you have those coupons. As far as the exterior goes, it has only been a year so we will see. Hopefully is will be better then the reports show. I think SW paint, especially the exterior oil based stains where very good at one time, but the switch to latex hurt them.

CU does long term tests and the article is worth reading.

I use Benjie-Moore myself (2nd from the top one).

However, Behr is a German company, so.... can you think of any other German products that are good? Even if you just limit it to chemicals - they are famed for that too.

Just keep them away from my Louisiana French food...

Is the Benjamin Moore paint really $55/gallon?
