With only 400 or so of them made in 80/81 or so, and with them never being intended to be a full on production car, I'd imagine that parts availability is really tough, though. A lot of the interior bits are standard parts, but I think a lot of the engine parts are M1 only, and things like the windshield, body, suspension, brakes, etc., I wonder.

I'm a big BMW fan, and that car was so outrageous for BMW to come out with. At the time, BMW was still a very conservative company, and the M1 was nuts!

I thought the first gen M5 had the M1 engine.

Stripes arent THAT bad IMHO.

Sure that you have seen this: <object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/yoZH51eS3YM&hl=en"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/yoZH51eS3YM&hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>

Here's some more info on the striped model Wayne referenced:

An already rare and collectible automobile, the BMW M1 has begun a steady rise in value as more collectors recognize its signifcance and scarcity. The M1 on offer here is even rarer, as it was coachbuilt by Styling Garage Spezialkarosserien in Germany for the former Prime Minister of Qatar. The body has been reworked to incorporate the flared fenders, rear wing, and lower front spoiler from the race spec M1 ProCars. The paint and interior were refinished at the same time, both using the BMW M tri-colors as a contrast to the pearl white paint finish. Custom BBS Racing wheels were built for the car, and finished in matching white
.

Interesting history!

FYI.

Best,

Kurt

There were plenty of custom cars built for high end clients in the middle east during the 80's. Most looked like crap than and look worse now. Remember those B&B 911's that were featured in VW & Porsche mag? I'd buy it and put real Procar bodywork on it.

the 03-19-2008 12:23 PM

Procar bodywork does look badazz, but I'd prefer a box stock example.

Stock is best. Those wings are ab-sol-ute-ly HIDEOUS. Ruin the car. Too much Bozo.

Even the flares look out of place.

IMO

They are similar in architecture, but there are a lot of major differences. For example, IIRC, the fuel injection systems are totally different. I don't think they share many engine parts.

The striped one is on ebay with a $178K buy it now. Way too much, IMO, for that car. Find a stock one instead.

///M Stripes? Here's a car that's in the factory stable:

Wow- the parts biz makes a GREAT tax shelter for a super-car jones, doesn't it?

I have to say I like the ones w/o the aero addons better.

Here's a shop in Fort Lauderdale that currently has 3 M1's in stock! No affiliation on my part:

Good find. Either of those are a MUCH better buy than the butchered one, for less money.

the 03-26-2008 12:58 PM

Wasn't the BIN on the butchered one close to $180K?

But either way, those are much better buys, even for the same or more money.

On Ebay now, 2 days left. Item # 290215675124
Is this the same one Wayne? Are you bidding?

DMRK 03-26-2008 05:10 PM

OK I see it is the same.
Wonder what the reserve is?

Normy 03-26-2008 05:44 PM

Motorcar Gallery has three M1's in stock. The third one, the red car? I stopped by there today, and they wouldn't tell me anything about it.

Fascinating cars! The fit and finish of these is TERRIBLE! I'm serious, a 1980 Dodge Omni has better panel fitment. I stood there and looked at the blue car and you can't believe how horrid this thing looks in person! If this was a 928 you'd pay $2500 tops for this thing. You are buying one of 456 hand-built "homologation specials"; Trust me- these need owners who are willing to deal with a whole lot of crap!

einreb 03-26-2008 06:09 PM

I have never driven one, but have seen a few in person... they look like kit cars.

mint LWT e36 m3 and a mint e30 M3 would make lovely additions to the stable

Anyone else seen this one?

I've found some at mobile.de, but none here in the states.

Thx,

Buy what you need for your biz,Wayne. My reading as a consumer? I'd have to make 200 mile round trips in order to have the "honor" of having the S.O.B, (at BMW)serviced.

These days? To paraphrase Chuck Berry? I'm going to buy a car I can afford...and I do mean..A FORD!

I'm done with "status" cars...But..that's just me,

I thought the M1 was cool when it first came out. Seems kind of dated to me now.
