Firearms training for kids

General Cosgrove was interviewed on the radio recently.
You'll love his reply to the lady who interviewed him concerning guns and children.
Regardless of how you feel about gun laws you gotta love this!
This is one of the best comeback lines of all time.
It is a portion of an ABC interview between a female broadcaster and
General Cosgrove who was about to sponsor a Boy Scout Troop visiting
his military headquarters.

FEMALE INTERVIEWER:
So, General Cosgrove, what things are you going to teach these young
boys when they visit your base?

GENERAL COSGROVE:
We're going to teach them climbing, canoeing, archery and shooting.

FEMALE INTERVIEWER:
Shooting! That's a bit irresponsible, isn't it?

GENERAL COSGROVE:
I don't see why, they'll be properly supervised on the rifle range.

FEMALE INTERVIEWER:
Don't you admit that this is a terribly dangerous activity to be teaching children?

GENERAL COSGROVE:
I don't see how. We will be teaching them proper rifle discipline before they
even touch a firearm.

FEMALE INTERVIEWER:
But you're equipping them to become violent killers.

GENERAL COSGROVE:
Well, Ma'am, you're equipped to be a prostitute, but you're not one, are you?

The radio went silent and the interview ended.

If more kids saw what a real firearm could do instead of the fantasy they see in TV/Movies/Video games we would probably have a lot less shootings IMHO.

When I was about 12 years old my dad loaded me in the car and we drove away from town out to the woods. I had no idea why we were there.

He went to the trunk of the car, took out his shotgun, and told me to follow him, there was not a lot of talking.

We walked a ways into the woods, he told me to stop, he walked forward a good distance and aimed his shotgun at a tree off center. He fired, the noise was unbelievable alone, the damage to the tree was remarkable.

Then we had a talk about guns and how dangerous they were, I never messed with a single gun after that day, if my dads intention was to keep me away from messing with them it worked.

My story was in response to Scott. He stated that if kids saw the damage a gun can do it would influence them.

I can attest to it because its exactly what my dad set out to do, show me just how dangerous a gun blast is.

One kid in the neighborhood took out his dads gun after school, all I could remember was my dads lecture, I protested, I told him to put it back, I was laughed at , I went home as my father instructed me to do, I did not want to end up like that tree, and I did not want to see first hand one of my firends end up like that tree.

My dads demonstration worked on me.

I learned about guns the same way Jim did, but it was my grandpa, I was 6, and the target was a jug of water...

I shot my first 12 ga. at the age of 9 on a Thanksgiving Day while visiting my grandfather's farm and under my dad's supervision. It was just something that dads taught their sons when I was growing up...respect for, and how to use them properly.

Guns and hookers... there's something there, but I just can't put my finger on it...
