I don't think California's farmers are really interested in the illegal problem with the constant supply of people to pay less. It does keep the prices of vegetables down in NM though doesn't it?

Any place with our type of climate will be a haven for homeless. Not a lot of homeless from San Diego heading up to Wisconsin. We've almost run out of the supply of Ronald Regan era homeless so we are just restocking the shelves.

That is one of those ideas that people feel so comfortable repeating. (cheaper vegetables.) Have you ever put a number to this? . ..a percentage? Of course it's California ...and labor/cost studies have been done. Anyway, going from memory, a head of lettuce would cost only pennies more (retail) if no Mexicans were around to pick it. --I expect that a quick web search will get the exact #'s

Gee...here in NM...the price of produce has not come down a bit. perhaps you are not passing on the savings...and the CA produce we do get here really sucks. usually unripe and poor quality. Maybe that is just for ease in transportation...but I have not seen it so bad elsewhere. It is much better in the southeast. An awful lot of the "fresh" produce I buy seems to come from Central/South America. particularly avacados and berries.

This fight isn't over. There is a growing movement for a a constitutional amendment to define marriage as between a man and a woman. I believe we will be successful.
It wasn't all that long ago when the people of California voted to outlaw gay marriage, so obviously a majority feels that way. Will we get 2/3? Only time will tell.

Or, maybe God will get fed up with this and make the big earthquake will hit and take care of the problem. He's done it before.

Why the need to put a percentage to it? Would it change the fact that paying more for workers to pick the vegetables would result in the farmers asking for more money. They want their margin to be maintained. Then the distributor, then the consumer's store, etc.

Same thing is happening in the Midwest meat packing industry. BY the way, I was not condoning the practice. Some farmers are knowingly looking aside and taking advantage of the illegal worker that will not complain. Would you assume that the offending farmers are all Democrats? Certainly they are all Capitolists.

What may be counter intuitive is that even with the magnifying factors of dist/resale we are still just talking pennies. WHY that is important is in the fact that "the pay to pickers" is of no significant scale . . .thus, a weak argument to point to "increased cost."

Aside from the wage scale , there are also health benefits, SS, CSD to pay as well. It all adds up. If the rationale for knowingly hiring illegals is not for the benefit of increasing the bottom line, then there must be a devious nationwide plot to upset the balance of our AG business.

Not exactly. It is tree hugging liberal Californians who are responsible for the gas prices. They gave up on the trees and moved to NY. They make formidable traders after years of experience being chained to trees. As a result, they have made a killing in the oil futures market. THey are also single handedly responsible for rejecting the drilling of oil off the New Jersey coast. They are also responsible for putting the oil right in the middle of a Federal Natural Reserve in Alaska. THey created oil shale at the Livermore Lab but, confounded oil companies by making it to costly to retrieve. FUrthermore, when Dick Cheney shot himself in the face and died (the real untold story), Silicone Valley created a Dick Cheney clone so there would me no disruption with our current foreign oil policy. Not to mention they secretly converted the Dickster's daughter into a Gay! THis was perhaps their greatest triumph.
