I respect the Officer's decision, I feel terrible that he had to do such a thing, I strongly believe no member of our Militaryshould ever have to do something so gut-wrenching. That Officer is as much a hero as the guy covering a hand grenade with his body so his buddies are spared. Kissing that Koran saved a few American lives IMHO.

New twist:

500 new shootings of the Koran
5,000 on-the-fence soldiers considering shooting the Koran
50,000 soldiers now on the fence who wouldn't have thought of it before.

Let's turn this around, if one of our boys was captured and he had a Bible in his possession, what do you think the Muslims would do?

Do you really think you would ever see one of their officers kissing a Bible?

I sort of understand where your going with this, but it is not the same. Covering a grenade with your body to save your buds will likely be your last action on this earth.

Singular action, incredibly heroic.

Kissing the Koran is a political/cultural sacrifice and was most likely the correct response. This action will satisfy local leaders and give them a face saving alternative to protesting or attacking coalition troops (this saves Iraqi lives). If roles were reversed, the average Iraqi would have presented a bible and kissed it.

The snipers actions were dumb.
