Sniper, you softie. I ALMOST mistook you there for a leftie....nah.

For once I agree with you on something. My girlfriend wears a diamond ring I bought her becauseI wanted her to have it. I wanted it to come without discussing the "meaning" of a ring, etc. No promises of anything except as a sign of my devotion to her. I would never intentionally hurt this woman and I try to reinforce that every chance I get.

To my mind (perhaps yours?) there is no greater promise nor commitment than that, if heartfelt.

Tanya apparently had good enough counsel to advise her to ride it out until the 11th year.

I would suspect that California divorce records are riddled with 9 and 11 year marriages. If the bread winner is the filing party it'll be a 9 year marriage. I know the Cruise/Kidman divorce was filed specifically with this timeframe in mind. It's a crazy rule and like any bright line rule creates an abundance of whacky results.

Wow. $20 Grand a month? I can see being stuck splitting the business, but to provide $7M and still have a commitment like that is insane. In VA they have provisions for the spouse getting married or entering a Marriage like situation. Lame.

Back in the day "till death do you apart" usually meant 10 to 15 years.

Yeah, i agree with all that. A marriage license doesn't make a person love you more, or vice versa.

Marriage to me is just a religious oddity.

Boy, is that ever true. I raised my kids telling them, "all the old sayings are true...including the ones that seem contradictory".

In this case, "Be careful what you wish for" i.e. Til death do us part....

We have friends that went through a similar situation. He built a successful business, worked too hard probably, but provided an exceptional life and unquestioned devotion for his family. His biggest fault probably was absence of family vacations. So the wife has a fling files for divorce, nasty, nasty, nasty. Their only child is definitely paying for it.

In the long run, he'll have a better relationship with his child and the child will see that the mother valued her life more than the family. But at what cost...

Fortunately my wife and I have a relationship built on mutual goals, commitment and values. Did I mention I love her? I'm a lucky guy, there are some whacked out XX's there.

(If you are young and single, I have two words for you: cougar hunting)

I work to live not live to work.

Moses, you friend CHOSE work over family. Service orientated? 14 million company and this guy could not fin 1 person in the entire country to do his job as good as him?

He lived to work and did not want to be with his family. He can say he loved them all he wants but actions speak louder than words, and his actions said work was more important to him.

I pay a guy 65K a year (in this area of Florida its VERY good money) to be me when I am not there. I may not be a rich as your friend materially when I am old but I will be richer than him family wise because my kids and my wife know I make an effort to be with them as much as possible and they love me for it.

In the last 2 weeks I was out of the office 10 of the 14 days spending time:

a. with my family in our timeshare in Atlantis for a week

b. got off plane from Nassau, dropped kids at Grandma's and jumped on plane to North Carolina to pick up POS Audi, drive to Savannah and spend 2 romantic nights alone with the wife.

I CHOOSE my family first, I have been married 18 years and honestly do not think a divorce will ever happen.

Sitting on a swing along the Savannah River Saturday night with my wife.

And now after 4 days of work I am ready for a 3 day weekend with them.

We were laughing so hard right there and it continued. We were using the self timer and trying to take self pictures and it was just going down hill to just plain silly.

It was a great weekend. We are rarely alone we do EVERYTHING with our boys, the last time we were alone, if you can call it that, was the Porsches on the Dragon meet last November.

Here is how it went downhill, this depressing thread needs a laugh anyway.

This one is for every stupid teenager out there that thinks they look cool
making this face, it just jumped the shark old people are making fun of you now.

I think we as a society are dependent upon instant gratification and letting media dictate what rules and boundries are set. We seem to want to "throw in the towel" the minute ***** does a 180.

My Wife and I have been together since 1985, and married in '02 (DanInPas and Sniper, I agree it's just paper, it was for insurance reasons). Believe you me, we've had bumps in the road and knockout, dragout arguments, but the bottom line is we respect each other and Love each other.

Walking away from a problem is easy, confronting your problems can be ugly and painful but you have to give it a shot.

By the way, I don't mean to disrespect people who have been through relationships where one side gives up while the other wants to work it out. If both aren't together, there's no hope for repair.

Work to live, both of you and you will not have problems, when you know your co-workers better than your wife you made a mistake somewhere.
