Today's Photo Shoot
Mrs WD and I were in northern Illinois photographing a cover for our magazine. It is a 1916 Emerson - Brantingham model L. The Model L was not one of agricultural technology's higher achievements, but this is a beautiful restoration of one of the 3 known to exist.
![]() ![]() E-B made their own engines and carburetors. A good carburetor was a big, big deal in those days, as the technology wasn't well understood. ![]() My assistant, taking a break. While we were there we shot this great old Stinson tractor too. It is also one of 2 or three in existence. The transmission is one huge iron casting that weights about 4000 lbs.

These four valves are primers, correct?

Yes! You open the petcocks and pour gasoline into the cups. Start with about 1/4 of a cup in each one. Then you close the petcocks and crank the engine over, watching the color of the exhaust. If it starts HOORAY!! if it doesn't you need to consult the local gas engine witch doctor to interpret the exhaust gas color and recommend a solution.

![]() The engine looks pretty racy for a tractor. The used a lot of headless designs in those days. Compression ratios were only around 4:1.

I love old machinery.
For a while we had RDF-TV on our cable, they had a tractor show I loved to watch. My name is Scott and I have a tractor problem. Note that I was born and have lived my whole life in Los Angeles, so you don't have to be a county boy (or girl) to love old tractors. I envy you guys that acreage and can shoot off guns, ride your dirt bikes, ATV's, and tractors on your own land. Mom grew up in rural Kansas... maybe it is in my genes.

Hey, cradle robber. What is she, 25? Must make for a pleasant work environment [/QUOTE]
I assure you our marriage is totally age-appropriate. Mrs. WD is only 4 years younger than me. Yes, she is wonderful to work with. I cherish every moment with her. She is very photogenic and she's a favorite subject of my attempts at photography.
