Shotgun Guys,

Is it worth the extra money to get a Remington 870 over a Mossberg 20"?
The local store has the Mossberg on sale for $229 and I thought for a gun I hope to never need it would be good enough. Should I spend the extra for the Remington and are there more after market parts, folding stock etc.?

More aftermarket stuff for the Mossberg.

That, and when the military did trials, they went with the Mossberg 590. Only difference between the 590 and the 500 is the mag tube length (and therefore the attaching nut on the barrel)

FWIW I've shot the living crap out of my 500 and abused it badly (think red clay sand in the action and firing a few hundred rounds that way), still going strong.

There are more 870s out there than Mossbergs. (As a counter-argument to id10t. )

Really, this argument is much like Ford guys versus Chevy guys...

That said, they are both equally well-made and both equally reliable. Get whichever one you like the best--or get whichever one your group of friends won't give you $h!t for owning.

+1.......... I happen to have an old Mossberg 500, but for general use, a 12 ga pump shotgun is a 12 ga pump shotgun.

"The Remington is a much higher quality piece."

They're pretty close if you're talking about an Express.

Tabs, they cost too much, I just want something in case the Canadians bust through the boarders, come to SoCal Beaches and try to steal all the clean shaven girls off the beach.

I paid 229 for my remington 870 express. I also have a Mossy...they are about the same as far as reliability, aftermarket, and accuracy. That said I prefer the Remmy.

I have an 870 that I Duracoated Urban Mirageflage myself that looks pretty cool and fires well, and a Winchester 1300 Defender. Both kick the ***** out of you when you shoot them.

Since it is such a single purpose gun, I'd get the cheaper of the two.

I don't think I can find an 870 for that price, if I could I would get it, I think they feel lighter.

In the Marines I had a Stevens 77 18", I liked it.

I have a 590, it works. Although the Rem has a more ergo place for the safety if you go with a pistol grip. Better yet get a USGI Winchester Trench Gun.

When you spend under $300 on a pump shotgun they are all pretty much alike. No offense but they both are what they are, inexpensive guns. If it is just a "house gun", it will do the job and I hope you never have to use it. However if you like pump guns look for an Ithaca 37 or a Win 12 and it will always be worth what you paid for it.

Not so the finish on the 870 is much high quality then the Mossberg.

Belgium Browning A5 over under. Ok, that might be out of the price range. 870 express magnum is what I shoot, but it doesn't matter much, I can't hit the ground with a shotgun.

But the Benelli design is much simpler, and far more robust. Benelli's don't jam.

A higher quality finish is about a lot more than making a weapon prettier. It makes it more resistant to the elements and damage as well.

-------------------------

No man portable weapon on earth will beat the firepower of a 12ga semi-auto riot gun out to a range of about 30-35 meters.

I can send 7 aimed rounds downrange from a Beretta/Benelli semi-auto in under 3 secs. Using 15 pellet 3" 00 buck, that's 105 .33 caliber projectiles in under 3 seconds. More than triple the number of lethal projectiles that a typical modern machine gun will put downrange in the same time frame.

Only a mini-gun(modern gatling gun) can exceed the firepower of a semi-automatic shotgun.
