And what's next? Why not:

- Report tax evaders
- Report illegal tuning
- Report bad drivers
- Report large collections of guns
- Report speeders
- Report shady looking dudes - maybe they're pedophiles
- Report excessive water usage
- Report smokers who smoke around children or in their cars
Why not these people, because they do not pose a threat to our loved one's and the general public. Impaired driving is a totally selfish act and is always preventable. Here in Canada the penalty for a first offense is far too lax. I would not be concerned if someone innocent is pulled over. Only the guilty are charged with impaired driving, if they are over the limit they are guilty, if they refuse to take the test that's their problem. (In Canada it is an offense to refuse to take a breathalyser test if there are reasonable grounds to demand one).
People who worry about the civil liberties of impaired drivers are out of step with the general public or are lawyers.

LOL, maybe we should be reporting the drivers of every car with an Obama sticker on it as a danger to society
Sure would piss em off getting pulled over for no reason except I'd bet quite a few would get hauled off for something.

Why is it viewed as snitching and not viewed as one's civic obligation to remove a menace from the road?

I have no patience for this kind of behavior.

Passive not my concern none of my business.

Intrusive and potentially life threatening to everyone around, I would feel inclined to call.

I called one time because this hooptie was weaving in and out of traffic cutting people off, near misses, slamming brakes, cars weaving to not get hit, yeah I called then followed at a safe distance a FHP officer pulled them over a few miles down the road.

Another time I called because a guy got out of a car at a red light and stated screaming and cursing and punching this ladies car next to me, she was in her car with 2 small children and scared to death, he punched her side window a couple of times and then spit on it, I at first thought it was a domestic thing and quickly realized it was a road rage thing. I called the sherriff and they dispatched a deputy while keeping me on the phone. They arrested him on violation of probation, it seems he has a violent history and was on probation, I also had the womans tag number written down so they could get a statement. Everything happened so fast I actually called once we were moving.

I got a call back from the police 30 minutes later thanking me for calling and that the guy was now in jail and that he had issues and it was good I called.

If I saw someone watering their lawn in violation of restriction I would not bother reporting it no one is directly being harmed.

I reported a guy driving like a maniac once. I have no idea if he was drunk. I thought he might very well run into somebody.

Recently, I turned somebody in for the first time ever...a local bar where Cindy & I go play pool in the afternoons. Almost every time we went there, we'd notice a new style blue Mustang parked in the handicapped zone...on the stripes where a van would unload a chair.

One time, on my way home, I stopped at the local P.D. station, walked up to the counter, and said: "Want to write a big ticket?"

The blue Mustang still parks at this bar...but no longer in the handicapped zone.

Guess it ticks me off because we do have a handicapped mirror hanger. Most of the time Cindy (she has MS) says, "I'm feeling pretty good today. Let's save the space for somebody who needs it."

in France on handicapped parking places, they have signs like this

Translation "if you take my spot, please also take my handicap"

I'll often park wrong, but never on a handicapped spot, if i see anybody doing it, i'll make sure to tell em... And if i see a fat mercedes with a handicap sticker from the city council, and a person who just ain't handicapped comes out... i'll make sure they loose that sticker via the city... ain't no excuse for that...And the argument, that they sometimes drive a handicapped person around doesn't fly, they shouldn't park there on days they ain't chauffeuring for that person...

It's tough to have this discussion when it's so hard to get past the knee-jerk reaction to dui.

What knee-jerk reaction? Someone going out and getting shltfaced and then trying to drive home happens by accident. It should be so easy to explain the deaths and ruined lives as the result of such stupidity.

Many people still get off with a slap on the hand today and these are people who have multiple offenses.

+1
I think it would take losing someone you love or are close to to change your view point on reporting drunk drivers.
I have reported a few and agonized about people I know driving while hammered...
Close ranks and report the dumb fuchs.....
Driving is a privilege.

My breathalyzing skills are weak but if I see someone driving dangerously, I will call.

I understand that you are concerned about "Big Brother" or a world full of snitches but, drunk driving is dangerous and needs to be dealt with before someone gets killed. If that means alerting the LEO why not? Wouldn't you call in a report of a robbery or assault in progress or is that a knee-jerk reaction also?
To me, the party that would be offended by calling in a report is probably a member of DAMM (Drunks Against Mad Mothers). Present company excluded of course.

The knee jerk reaction is with regard to the discussion - not about the dui act itself.
