My new laptop has Vista. I had a couple of growing pains the big thing being that my ISP provider's modem wouldn't recognize the new computer. After 5 hours on the phone with 3 different call centres I got a new modem and all is well.

Vista has been rock solid for me on 7 computers at home. Get at least 2GB of RAM, decent video card and you'll be happy.

The main reason I hear people b*tch about Vista is because they can't get their 1980's periphials (printers, modems etc) to work because of driver issues. Time to upgrade people.

My little sister-in-law had her 1 year old Dell laptop (with XP) fried in a thunderstorm this summer. I ordered her a new one after they started charging for XP, so we went with Vista (for free). Now her 1 year old HP laser printer will not work, and HP does not have a Vista driver available. To me, Vista is an ploy to force customers to replace their hardware and software, disguised with a prettier OS. Now I either have to install XP for her, or she has to replace her printer.

You're missing the point, if it was a Vista O/S, it wouldnt have got 'fried' in the storm.

Dude, if it were an Apple, it would have absorbed the lightning energy and powered her house for an entire year!

I've been using Vista for 5 months now. Only one issue... when my router dropped signals, XP reaquired much faster.

The Problem (capital "P") with vista has nothing to do with whether it's stable or will run for you. With enough patience, money, and luck you can get it to run well as long as you're configuring your computer the way microsoft wants you to.

The Problem lies in where vista fits in with microsoft's plan for your future. Vista exists to get control of DRM and, therefore, your electronic world. Vista is the second major step (XP registration being the first) in turning what was your computer into their internet appliance and moving you to a subscription model to keep your - oops, meant their, internet appliance operational.

That's where it's headed. Your choice.

Microsoft no longer supports XP SP1, and at some point, the same will be true of SP2. Just get Vista, take a few minutes to get familiar with it, and be happy. Your new laptop should have more than enough RAM, processor speed, video memory, etc. for Vista.

Matt, use an available (older if possible) printer driver. It should work fine. If graphics are not an issue, a plain old LJ4 driver is rock solid. If it doesn't, I'm HP authorized on many laser printers. If I can't fix it, slodave knows everything. He can help.
