best vacuum?

My 30+ year electrolux is going south so I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good vacuum cleaner. I was looking at the dyson animal and/or the miele. Any opinions, rants, complaints?

make sure you get one with a hose so you dont get arrested when you need a vac for "that"

do a search. Believe it or not this has been discussed a couple of times.

The answer: Miele :p

I do not use the vacuum but my wife likes Miele. Keep an eye out on Craigslist. Some clean freaks upgrade vacuums frequently, and you can pick up a $900 vacuum for a song when 1-2 years old. My wife trades up this way (always second hand) every few years.

The only vacuum I use is my shop vac. ;)

Some of us single parents end up working a vacuum in the home on a regular basis. My Miele rocks...

If you are staying cannister than get another Electrolux. If you are going upright, a couple Kenmores rate top 2, Kirby is 3. I bought a hardly used Kirby three years ago for $125 and tossed our Dyson. Dyson's are gimmicky. Kirby will outlive me.

We have a Dyson Animal; it's awesome.

I like my Oreck.

Lightweight unit, big motor and excellent filter bags do the trick.

Simple and straightforward.

+1 I installed a central vac system for about $1k. If you have an unfinished basement/crawl-space it's a breeze to retrofit into an existing house for anyone with construction knowledge. The unit sits in the garage and is silent inside the house. I was able to install one outlet on each floor (1200 sq ft/floor) of our 2 story house, including the basement. With a 35 ft hose we can reach everywhere on each floor without unplugging, and it is vastly superior to any regular vacuum.

Miele. Hands down.

i can make you a deal on the $2000 rainbow my wife just bought, she comes with it:D

We have a larger home and after looking at a suitable Miele ($700+) and Oreck ($750) we went to the Sears outlet and bought their newest canister with a 4 yr warranty for $175. Works ok. I really liked the Oreck (upright) and we took one home to try but the head wouldn't fit under our cabinet overhangs thus requiring a second pass with broom or attachment. It also didn't blow me away with incredible suction vs. the older Sears model it was to replace.

I'm sure our new Sears vac will only last 2-3 years but with the warranty they will replace it if ANYTHING goes wrong. Not a bad deal.

There was a thread on vacuums a year or so ago. Do a search.
