Skier Poll and Pics
With a big storm hitting the NE this weekend I'll be heading to VT to ski some freshies!
With people from all over I assume there are tons of skiers lurking/posting here. Post your ski pics. My father took this in the early 60's of Tuckerman's Ravine on Mt Washington, NH. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1229695128.jpg |
Till I get my right rotator, lower back and left knee fixed I need to stay away from the stuff.
Started when I was 3, worked my way through college as an Instructor at various NY mountains. Favorite gig was Lake Placid. Did that one for a couple of years. Used to race. Got invited to do one of those Red Cross Celebrity deals once. Was in St. Anton Austria, skied with Ed Bagley, Shari Belafonte, the Camel cigarette dude, Barbara Eden, the guy who played Renko on Hill Street Blues and bunch of others that I can't remember now. Ahh youth. |

I hear ya! I'm 42 and been skiing all my life and feel it the next day more than ever!. I live in the East with College in NH but lived in Tahoe for year and my sister lives in CO so I've skiied out west a ton. It doesnt get any easier as you get older but at least the equipemnt has come a long way. I never raced but grew up skiing the woods and moguls in the east and would enter contests when I was in my 20's and 30's. Now its all fast GS type runs for speed. I'll still put together a few nice mogul runs just to show up a few 20 somethings. But that will be all I've got for the day. Let it snow!! |
The poll is missing Boilerplate and "stuff to jump off of"
I prefer above tree line, wide open, fast hard pack with cliffs and drop offs. Powder is for sissies. |
I've skiied all my life - both kids were into racing. My brother-in-law runs a ski area in the Midwest. My son was ranked 1st in Slalom for the US while in his teens. I'm a past Regional Director of USSA and a former FIS/USSA certified official. Most of my skiing is now with grandkids on much gentler slopes. In 1991 I broke my right femur at Telluride after hitting a giant boulder that was maybe just a little off piste and spent about a year in a chair/on crutches/with a cane. Four surgeries later I'm still skiing but I'm much happier on groomed slopes. No cartilage left in either knee makes moguls difficult and painful. Cruising in powder is great but tiring. I usually get to Vail/Aspen someplace out west every year. Next year it's Vail in February.

Skiing here in the east there's plenty of boilerplate to go around. Mad River Glen has it all: Ice, powder, moguls, rocks, trees, dirt, NO GROOMING all served by a single and very slow SINGLE chair!! |
Might end up going snowboarding again tonight, fourth time this week.
|
As I've got older I prefer skiing the West in good weather, but any hill any time.
I hope I never lose the love for skiing. My father stopped when he turned 45. Here's some old photo's Me and my brother when we where a lot younger http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1229706812.jpg Steve |

I have a really cool pic of Tuckermans ravine from when I climbed it about 13 years ago.
|
It's that time of the year again......

Not sure I get the poll, but what's not to like about skiing?
Here's my local mountain: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1229714063.jpg |
2 ruptured disks in my back (skiing accident) when I was 23. I can ski, but only rather boring crusing runs.:(

I tried a snowboard for a couple days last year. On the second day I took a private lesson (group on first day) in a last ditch effort to stay on it. I gave it up because I figured another fall would put me in the hospital.
I don't have any pics I'm willing to post :) |

With todays technology, I may stand a better chance, but no thanks... |

Too damned old & infirm these days, but no reason I can't give a plug. Best Powder in Oregon is found at Mt. Bachelor... |
I like to downhill, but find myself spending more time freeheel skiing. Less crowds and better exercise.

Been to the now Bankrupt Yellowstone Club a few times. Montana
My friend has a place up there, he rents this jet to get us there. 2 hours from Orange County to Montana. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1229721720.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1229721735.jpg |
Skier here. This February marks my 34th year. If I die on skis, I will have died happy.
This one almost did kill me. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1229722465.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1229722485.jpg 20 ft. drop, my right shoulder took most of the hit, but my head hit hard enough to black out for a few secs. |

Tuckerman is insane! I hiked in the summer, and it was tough. I used to think how crazy it would be to ski it.
I grew up in the town next to Stow, Vermont so I am used to some stuff, but that was crazy! |
I didn't see the naked snow-bunny carrying cognac box, so I feel excluded. :(

Double Black Diamond Skier here; been skiing all my life. Taught my wife and then all my kids. We used to have a condo up at Silver Star in Vernon and we're planning to buy a chalet up at Sun Peaks soon. Love the sport, but 'eh I'm Canadian too!
Sledding has really cut into my ski time the last couple years though; something about a motor attached to the skis that I like ;) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1229759972.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1229760001.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1229760033.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1229760126.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1229760300.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1229760368.jpg |
Wow not many from the East. I'm jealous of all the folks out west even if we have 2' of fresh snow. I am mopre suprised by that not many boarders compared to skiers. I thought they took over the slopes!!
as my buddy always says.....Ski to die, live to tell!! |

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1229807654.jpg The perfect way to end the day! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1229807620.jpg My son at 4yo, at 6 he is now confidently running greens. My daughter who will turn 4 this spring just did her first green run last night with the help of my wife and a ski harness http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1229807689.jpg |
We're usually too busy having fun to take pics. This one is about a decade ago. Kids and I at Vail. I'm on my wife's shorties just having fun with the kids.
http://img408.imageshack.us/img408/7...wlskidszi2.jpg Me (red lid) and 2 guys from work 2 years ago at Red Mountain in BC. http://img408.imageshack.us/img408/3671/redmtnaqd7.jpg I only ski west. I'll try Europe some day, though. |
today was killer at Kirkwood.. supposed to get 2-3 feet in the next few days!!

I remember hitting it after a huge storm that hit on a Thurs left 6' of snow by Sat and and they shut the roads down so we had knee deep freshies for 4-5 days since no one could get in or out. Does it still have the skull and cross bones expert only sign on the main lift going up the face? I also recall jumping off the lip on "the Face" on the backside after the storm. it was a 20' drop. Love that place |
Here's me and my bride at Vail back in 1988ish. 203's IIRC (and I'm 5' 7"), I can't get used to demoing skis around 160mm, I hadn't used skis that short since I was 16...
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1229833227.jpg And then about 20 years later at Heavenly with the kids: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1229833760.jpg |
