+ others. Good post. However, some pensions are going away. So, 40% of something is better than 100% of nothing. Gov't and Mil will certainly be saved. I'm all for the Mil, but not all for politician's pensions.

Don't they each steal enough while in office?

I do not believe the market will come back in our life times.

I'm down about $160K as well. I've got my bucks in about 20 different mutual funds, in different sectors, housing, financials, manufacturing, US, European, Asian. They are ALL down. If I sell now, I've lost money for sure. I'm still buying through payroll deductions to the tune of $300/week. Maybe I'm a fool, but I see no choice but to ride it out.

Diversified

Instead of $300 in the mutual funds, why not half and the other half in a saving account. You will have to pay tax right now on the 150 in the saving account but you can always open a roth IRA at a later date when the market is better.

RUF,

It's 401K money, so I could look at putting 1/2 in funds, and 1/2 in some CDs, I suppose. I'll look.

Afterburn,

If it all goes to "0" then you and I will have a lot more to worry about than what we have in the bank.

With Hugh...

This Market seems to like 8000 as the Bottom....it has continually tested this level and held. Famous last words...however....

Will the market come back...yeah...sometime in the future...the Sotck market never really was in a Bubble this time around (as in 2000). Never was over valued....RE and Commodities certainily were...BONDs,,well look at the yield folks...there is NO FKING YIELD.

So what game is still left in town to make a BUCK? Or even to put money into something SAFE...?????

Some say CASH..well for now yeah......but they has turned on the Printing Press 24/7 at full speed....sooner or later that dog ain't gona hunt...and the USD and Bond equivlents will take a really big hit...especially if Obama and his friends SPEND SPEND SPEND big on their pet ideas. Obama does know this, but do his friends in the Congress? Some do some don't. Stimulus for tangible improvements will be OK, but not Health Care......The Chinese don't give a flying fk if you get sick and die, it is one less mouth to feed. Sorry Mr Liberal your bleeding heart for the rights of man in society have just hit a Great Wall..called CHINA.

So what to watch for....a devaluation of the USD against other currencys, increasing interest rates and Gold climbing strongly above $1000.00...You see those 3 things and you know it is the end of the USD...say hello to Mexico, Brazil and Argentina....

In that market certain stocks such as consumer staples will follow the inflation rate...others that are more discreationary spending stuff...well it will turn into toilette paper...

Currency a wheel barrel full will buy a postage stamp...and Wayne with his little Thread was a joke to anybody who has followed Weimar German History.....

So certain tangible assets will retain value...Sterling Silver Spoons for example..precious metal... Weapons and ammo...if they are not outlawed completily...who says the Constitiution means a fk???? LA LA land Boyz....People will give it up for their Ranch Home in the Burbs, SUV and Big Screen TV....just feed me....and keep me warm....

But that is speculation at this point...Tangible assets seem to be holding their own at the moment....some real strong, some a bit off their highs but holding....

Right now ya gotta give a bit of what appears to be a bargain or discount to move an item...so if ya bought at the high you are gona take a bit of a hit...not everyone has figured this out yet.

nope, but is there a posibility that it'll get too low and become 0. If it fall into this case, should I accept some lost or wait until it completely lost. I still don't know.

Remember unless the bottom falls out of the economy Collectables/Stocks will have a trading value...either up or down, but they will remain tradable.

+1. Unless you are talking about single stocks, if your 401k goes to $0 then guess what everyone else has. You will not be worried about how much money you have for retirement. You will be worried if you can find another meal at all in the next 3 days.

Well to get off a little, Last time they taxed everyone and called it Social security
This time they took our retirement........................................ ...............................

HOW SPOT-ON IS THIS?

Quote of the Week
'I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies. If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around the banks will deprive the people of all property until their children wake-up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered.'

They open The Pacific Garden Mission about a mile away from where I live. I just got to listen to a sermon if I want to get a meal. Jesus Save.

When it comes to that, think Mad Max. You won't live to see the 3rd day if you even have a belt on your pants.

Let's see, I just went to Lowe's supermarket and bought a little MahiMahi steak(on sale $4.99 lb.). Got a big bottle of nice Chilean wine(on sale $8.99). Seems like a well stocked store. Bought some gas for the 4runner(they are nearly giving those away around here). Paid $1.70 a gallon. No lines for gas. Schoolbus dropped off the neighborhood kids on time. Traffic lights still work. Heat is on. Had the wine with the grilled MahiMahi. Nice! The 3 youngest kids are still away at school. The jets are still landing every minute or so(I am in Charlotte right now, not Watkins Glen). There is unemployment, and times are tough, but a lot of folks are still working and getting paid. But plenty of guys and their families on this board are hurting
What is my point? Yeah, the market is tough right now but things will get back to normal in the next year or so. If you don't need to crack the retirement account right now, let it ride. But maybe you might want to rethink the dollar averaging scheme, and stay in cash with your contributions if you can. If Fed Reserve governors are saying stay in cash and canned beans, that's good enough for me right now.

That is b.s. You really should check your so-called facts.

His speech is not hard to find via google, took me 2 minutes to find the quote.

He was describing the fear of investors by telling an anectode of some TV pundit who was saying "cash and fetal".

He was not recommending "cash and fetal" or anything like it.

Quote:

Put cash someplace safe.

The head of the Dallas Federal Reserve was recently asked what positions he recommended given current market conditions and he said:
