I don't believe I'm missing it.
That's what I thought before I moved to Texas. You are.

So, Avocado afficianados, what's the difference between the smooth, shiny, bright green skinned Avos and the dark, matte finish, bumpy Avos?

Weird, technically, an Avocado is a berry.

At last count I believe there are actually 117 different varieties of avocados.
There are so many that some only have numbers rather than names.
We have one tree on the property that just produced fruit for the first time this year after 5 years of care. The fruit has very smooth deep purple skin.
We tried to identify this tree and it turns out that the tree is planted not for its fruit but for it's sturdy root system. It apparently never got it's grafting. The fruit tastes burnt and is very unpleasant. I guess I'll be learning how to graft an avocado tree.

I know that both Bacon and Fuerte (smooth skin) taste much better to me. They take a little longer to ripen than Haas and aren't as weather resistant. I think that's why Haas are seen most often in stores. We don't have many on our tree this year (maybe 50) due to the freeze in late '07 when we lost about 200. Mine ripen from March-June.
