Showing receipts at Wal-Mart

Has any one been bothered with having to stop and show your receipt at a Wal-Mart?

I am not talking about a TV of something not in a bag, I am talking about small items in bags.

I refuses to show my receipt yesterday and the lady followed me out the door, telling me that I was not being Kosher. (I had been in line a long time with milk and had a 30 minute drive to the house, but I am still an a$$.)

My 68 year-old mother took her cart back and told them to jam the receipt up their ass.
Told them to refund her money and she'd never shop there again. (Lives in a rural area, so not much threat there as they're the only game for miles...)
The manager apologized and now she never has to show her reeipt.
Of course, she's a bit of a loon anyway....

I've never had that problem.

Next time it happens, tell her, "Lady, if the security beeper goes off when I walk out, you can look in my bag... otherwise, go hassle somebody else... I'm not a thief."

This varies by retailer and state.

It is entirely driven to deter shop lifters.

Happens at Fry's Electronics. Both customers and employees would walk out the door with "free" stuff. It was so bad with the employees, that they had to put a cage around the area where CPU's, memory and other small expensive items were stored.

I like how the people at the exit ask me for my receipt, even though I already have it out for them to check. Most just check off the receipt with the highlighter without looking, a few look at every item...

We recovered over $1.4M in 2008 for a large big box customer by checking reciepts. Almost all of if was cashier error.

I look ahead of me and see if there's a lady standing there. If she is, I let the bag hang open, and have the receipt ready. They generally wave me right by with nothing but a cursory look in the open bag.

I bet I spend less time doing a bit of prep work (while walking, time I was spending anyways) than you guys do complaining to the poor old ladies ;)

I know it is just a BS deterrent for thieves, but it is a pain in the A$$. Wal-Mart has more cameras than a bank. Some lady at the front door asking for my receipt can't make that big of a difference.

911boost 02-04-2009 01:17 PM

Yes, all of those ARE cameras, keep telling yourself that.

The lady or person also serves as a greeter as well, something that goes back to Sam W. days...

dhoward 02-04-2009 01:17 PM

I usually just knock her down and run.

My Walmart does not check. But other places do.

Takes 5 seconds max and helps control shrinkage so does not bother me.

The one that chaps my ass is the, "phone number?".

I tell them flat out no! Fun to watch them go into mental lock cause they don't know how to proceed.

Or:
Them: "Do you have a Sears/Macy's/Kroger/Whatever credit card/savings card/deal card/fan card?"
Me: No.
Them (perplexed): Um...are you sure? Do you want one?
Me: No.
Them:You can save 10% on this purchase of $30 of groceries, in return for having yet another credit card drag down the American economy/have us track your purchasing habits!
Me: No.
Them: 10% man!! That's an amazing deal!!
Me: No
Then they swipe their employee card and give me the discounts anyways.

Thanks, that just saved me a dollar, while taking up 2 minutes of my time!

The last time I went to Costco I Nazi saluted the greeter at the door who was asking for ID cards. Now my wife won't let me go there or Wal-Mart . . . bonus!

the only thing i buy at wally world is motor oil. doing that wont really take money out of the small guys this store is closing down.

otherwise i cant stand the place. if they cant see the hassle of dragging around three jugs of oil to the counter and then picking them back up they really dont need to see my receipt. no i dont need no stinking bag...bottle has a handle...you landfill filling parasite.

but i have never been asked before.

costco sure they can see my receipt...leaves me time to put away my member card anyway

emcon5 02-04-2009 01:29 PM

Walmart and Frys do, I ignore both of them and walk right by. Neither has made a stink about it so far.

Costco does it as well, but (as I understand it) that is part of the membership agreement, so I don't have a problem with it.

In my small town, if they EVER try that s*** on me, I'll tell them where they can stick the receipt. I HATE Wal-Mart with a passion. I know it saves the company, but with all the camera's etc., they have to have a good idea of who does what.

i get rolled over every time i leave Guitar Center

krichard 02-04-2009 01:40 PM

After I go through check out and pay the store no longer owns whatever is in my bag and therefore has no right to see what is in it. I just tell them no or ignore them and watch them get all flustered. Quite entertaining and cheap fun if you ask me :)

Unless you're actually cross checking the items in the bag with the receipt, you're not recovering anything for anybody; swiping at the receipt with a highlighter doesn't do jack.

Tishabet 02-04-2009 02:02 PM

My costco does that... I often stop by to pick up just a few items (for example, last night it was lamb chops and chicken soup) and as a result I seldom use a cart. Balancing my purchases while digging through my pockets to produce the receipt is definitely a pain in the a$$.
