do you sprinkle salt on your watermelon?
my parent's very old stock broker did it years ago. man, i was probably 4 or 5 years old, but i still remembered. i just re-visited the concept, but i seriously kicked it up a few notches. i broke out a box of large grained french sea salt. WOW! the mild salty flavor, and the added crunchy texture. i was amazed.
watermelons..probably the best argument for the dog days of summer. (and bikinis) |
I've never even heard of that. Sounds pretty yucky.
I never heard of it, but I am game to try it once this summer. I'll keep you informed...lol
my grandparents did that.. tried it once, but don't like it.
You have seen the light vash :)
Never have, never will.
no
i think that's a southern thing. the salt is supposed to bring out the sweetness of the fruit.
i also heard from a mississippi gal that watermelons are poisonous if eaten before the fourth of july. i have tried balsamic vinegar and fresh ground black pepper on strawberries. sounds really strange but it was actually pretty good as far as contrasts go. |
I grew up salting watermelon. Haven't done it long time. Thought maybe it was a Minnesota thing. Taste good either way, but no salt would be the healthier choice.
hey, maybe it is a southern thing. salt enhances flavor. that is why you put a pinch into sweet things like pie crust.
just a few crumbles of salt adds something. i wont do it to a great watermelon. just what i need is more sodium. |
watermelon, cantalope, apples, oranges, raw potato, etc... salt on everything! salt and pepper on most everything else. sometimes salt, black pepper and cayenne pepper just to spice it up a bit
Yep, cantalope and apples too...
I have to have salt on my watermellon. All my family has done this. My wife can't under stand it. And yes born and still live in the south.
But now this southern boy prefers fluer de sel :) Jay |
Mennonite style.
A bit of Vegemite.
I go light with the salt on almost everything except watermelon and grits (along with lots of pepper). I think I just gave away where I'm from :)
Don't really care for salt on ripe watermelon, but salt on green watermelon is delicious. Had a nieghbor when I was growing up that started picking the watermelon real early in summer. The green ones she ate salted and the ripe ones without salt.
Grew up in California. angela |
I'll do it sometimes. I like wmelon either way.
Nothing weird about it, there are tons of foods that combine sweet and salt (most candybars are an example), that's a very appealing combo to a lot of people. |
Always, and lots of it .
Sugar sprinkled on tomato slices is good also.
Almost always!

WHAT!!!?
We salt our watermelons ALL THE TIME here in Canada! Right after we fill them with tequila that is ;) Never heard of it? |
Some hispanic guys from the South (I think a couple may have been from Central and/or South America) that worked in the kitchen of a bar where I bartended were eating some cucumber one day. I tried it. They had salt and cayenne all over the cucumber. It wasn't bad, but seemed unnecessary.

Definately...also, salt on pineapple....trust me.
Always, it's good for a laugh to see other people get grossed out over it.
Learned from my parents, and makes it taste way better. |
How about a sprinkle of salt on a draft beer? An old time thing..

Another: Half & core an apple, spread a light layer of peanut butter on it. mmmmm:)
salt on watermelon - we used to do it. Didn't think it was that unusual...
I always salted my watermelon as a kid. I do now sometimes, I just use less now as an adult.
Yep salt on the melons.... learned it from my grandparents.... grew up in Ohio.
I also put sugar in/on my spaghetti, tacos, chili, salsa...... pretty much anything with hot or tomato sauce. Of course chicken noodle soup gets a good squirt of mustard and on the rare occasion I get an old college filler food "Ramen Noodles", it gets a couple good squirts of ketchup. |
I salt mine. My grandfather used to grow them and he would sit all the grandkids around a giant oak stump in his yard with lawn chairs and slice them in half for us, we would go at them with butter knives and salt shakers. They are fun to feed to cows too, they eat them whole and make quite a mess.
Tequila?
We do Barcardi rum. Inject into melon with hypodermic needle numerous times and let stand in refrigerator a few hours. Heaven. |
I've salted many veggies, but not too many fruits. My neighbors used to always salt their pickles and pizza (not necessarily in the same meal). I'll second the peanutbutter and apple comment and also add peanutbutter and carrots.
I like salt on raw potato and tomato.
Awhile back, a Pelican salted his coffee and our local monthly meeting that puzzled me until he said it cuts the acidity. |
