windows 7 rant
So Vista was a fat bloated pig of an OS, and i hated it.. i stuck to XP.
Now W7 was announced, supposed to be faster then greased lightening. Tried the RC, and you know what, it IS seriously fast, and ready for all the new hardware and software...lovely! But Microsoft being Microsoft, figured it had to do something to piss folks off, so they removed the option to turn off all the bloat and return to the classic look. Seriously , why ??? I like to have my stuff in the way i'm used to have it, the way i can work as fast as i want. Why are they forcing customers to learn a new method of navigating on their own frigging pc??!? Because MS decides , "it's time to move on" ??!?!? So you can get the quicklaunch back via a workaround, eg set up a toolbaar to do almost the same. You can turn off unwanted stuff from the start menu... But then you still have a fat menu , with a big grey area in it, and a menu system that still doesn't work like it used to... Sure you can make shortcuts for the things they took a way from the desktop.. But why should i workaround something that worked and i liked out of the box?? probably a futile attempt at "making a difference", but i started a petition... http://www.petitionspot.com/petitions/classicW7

I honestly haven't heard a bad thing about Windows 7.
I think Microsoft licked it wounds and learned its lesson. As far as the "forcing" thing, they already did it would Office 2007. I'll withhold judgment until I see it.

I'm not a Windows guy although I do have a couple of MSFT boxes. 1st thing I do is turn on Classic mode.
Was a similar experience when Apple rolled out OS X. I think the transition for Mac users was less troubling since many of us already had familiarity with .nix file systems.

The following quotes were cut from an article on CNN/Money: "Windows XP, which was launched in 2001, had a record sales year in 2007. A stunning 83% of IT professionals in the Dimension Research survey skipped a Vista upgrade and continue to use the eight-year old Windows XP"

i'm on 7 right now, and it's what Vista should have been from the start
Except for the bloody classic mode that's gone... i work with keyboard and mouse at the same time, all the time and i'm faster that way with this new stupid start menu, i can't work that fast. the classic menu is for folks who know how to work the new menu is for those who aren't savy and/or aren't in a hurry normally i start something press the windows key navigate with arrow keys bam less then a second now windows key type the name of what i need never mind the windows run thing you can't navigate to it without first scrolling through other crap you don't need and when you turn stuff off, the menu stays the same size, and just shows a big grey empty area... it's just silly

Does it actually do anything new or is it just the same old OS with more bells, whistles, animations, dancing clowns and other typical Microsoft bloatware crap?
An OS should be transparent. It should be something that you never notice. It's the stage, not the show. XP is fair but I still think it gets in the way a bit too much.

Jeff, MS is going backwards with W7. Less bells and whistles - like Win2000, but apparently keeping and moving ahead with some of the Vista feel.
As far as XP - I was a die hard 2000 fan, but ever since my "new" laptop and XP, things have been fine. I think I have had two BSOD's in 4 years and one was caused by me, the other was a fluke and may have been a bad driver update. I can upgrade MB's with XP, just as I had done with 2000.

actually , MS stated it won't change, they only look for bugs left in the thing as it's designed right now.
POP, there 's a need for a new version from time to time, if only to keep up with modern hardware possibilities, and new software technology... 64 bit xp exists, but it doesn't work well enough to be usefull in anything but specific situations. all pc's now , are 64 bit, except for maybe the thin pc's running on Atom class cpu's and at some point all applications will be 64 bit, hence at some point XP will effectively not work out anymore. And that's fine, but MS made the capital error, of removing something that need not be removed...

You know, I'd heard nothing but bad about Vista when it came out. I'd avoided it like the plague. XP worked great compared to previous versions of Windows. Last year I bought a new PC. It's a Dell Core 2 duo, 4 Gb ram, decent HD, DVD burner. Nothing special, refurbished, I paid $270. It came with 64bit Vista Home Premium. I wasn't sure what to expect and thought that I'd end up installing XP, but Vista works, very, very well. Much better than XP. Yeah, if you pull up the task manager, it shows it's using a lot of RAM. I've read that MS changed their RAM philosophy with Vista. Previously it was to have as much as possible free. If it's "free" then it's sitting there not working for you. So now they've decided to use most of the RAM all of the time. This new PC is blazing fast compared to my old PC. Yes, it's got more processor and more RAM. Still, it's very fast. It certainly feels better than XP to me.
I recently upgraded to Vista Ultimate. Now I've got RD (only in ultimate and business), and the SUA (subsystem for UNIX based Applications) download which allows me to use a bunch of unix commands in a command prompt which is nice. Here's a sample. C:\Windows\system32>ls | grep system* systemcpl.dll systeminfo.exe systemsf.ebd C:\Windows\system32> I like it. It's only available for Win 2003 server, 2008 server, and Vista Enterprise/Ultimate as far as I know.

I don't understand this. When I press the Windows key on Windows 7, my cursor is already in the run/search box. I just have to keep typing what I want to do.

Three pertinent questions:
1. Will it boot up faster than XP? 2. Will it allow me to run my applications faster than XP? 3. Is the interface superior to XP? If the answer to any of the above is "no", then I'm sticking with XP and certainly don't see the need to pump another $500 towards Seattle.

just ditched 7 and went back to XPsp3
but not without making a screwup and deleting the wrong partition.. luckely i had most stuff backed up anyway, POP 1 no 2 no 3 not in my opinion I personally don't see any reason to move, i still can get all drivers for XPsp3 , in fact i just fine tuned my xp sp3 bootcd with nlite.. all drivers, no ?'s or !'s in device manager ,fire and forget. And for the time being, my apps, tools and games are all xp compatible, where as many of em aren't vista compatible... So screw you MS.. i'm not having it. The petition is turning out to be pathetic.. i bothered to post the link in several forums where they were moaning about the classic menu... i'm talking 14+ page threads, and hardly no response in the petition, just 3-4 more, and i think they came from here, not from the moan threads... maybe it'll get 1000 000 votes in 2014.

I must be weird because I love Vista and have never had any problems with it at all... I have a Windows Home Server at home and we have 7 Vista clients hooked up to it and I've had nothing but success with Vista in terms of hardware and software compatibility and performance.

I prefer Vista as well.
The best improvement over XP is when an application crashes, locks up, gets stubborn etc., you can still control the cpu. I can't tell you how many times I had to hard boot a XP box when the keyboard got locked out due to an application error.
