Tube amp works! Found a burnt resistor last night and after playing with the spares and having them get red hot, figured there may be another issue. Replaced the one resistor with a different type, but with same values and the same thing.. Today I found a capacitor I soldered in backwards. Temporarily wired it the correct way and it all works. Clean tones and distorted! For a 5 watt amp, this thing is too loud! Good thing it can be dialed back.

Tonight's project is to clean it all up. Don't know how I'm going to solder the cap in the right way. It's not easy to get to.

Anyone with tube amp knowledge.... Are the tubes supposed to get really hot like light bulbs?

nynor 09-08-2011 05:48 PM

i don't have much experience, but yes, tubes get really nuckin hot.

slodave 09-08-2011 05:58 PM

Yeah just got off the phone with a guy here that deals with tube amps. He said the tube I'm running will burn the skin off.

Now to fix the miswired cap, button it up and ROCK AND ROLL!

Turn it up to 11 so I can hear it up here.

Ok wood on order. Glue and bits on order. Saw blade in the am. Let the insanity begin.

slodave 09-08-2011 06:10 PM

When I started this, I wanted an amp I could play quietly, distorted or clean and not disturb the neighbors. Um, this amp screams now! If I cranked everything up, I'd end up like Marty McFly from Back To The Future and the scene where he plugs the guitar into the huge amp.

This amp does play quietly too and sounds good.

okay.... i am going to have to build an amp. bollocks.

Porsche-poor 09-08-2011 06:30 PM

We would love to see that on vid. Land on something soft to be safe.

It's a fun project, that doesn't cost too much. If you can scavenge the correct transformers from other equipment, it's even less expensive. I think I have around $200 in this project. I'm going to build more amps. :D A stereo tube amp for the radio would be nice.

I shocked myself again, sorry, no vid. :) I don't really plan on recreating the Marty McFly scene. ;D

Like a well worn rope? Didja fall?

porsche4life 09-08-2011 08:41 PM

Did have to lock off on a rappel and invert myself...

Porsche-poor 09-08-2011 09:51 PM

An inverted sid......not really a pretty site. Not to mention the nightmare i'll have now. Night all.

slodave 09-08-2011 09:56 PM

Night. Hopefully he wasn't wearing a kilt.

Geronimo '74 09-08-2011 11:06 PM

morning.

I'll be looking in the job classifieds today.
Had a talk with the boss yesterday and when this project is finished in a few months, they have a deskjob for me..... :(
The promoted somebody else to do my old job and now there is no place left for me... Can you fuhking believe it?
They tried to sweet talk me into the new job, but I'm not convinced.
I want to work outside, manage and run a construction site, I don't want to sit on my ass all day doing a fuhking deskjob. There's no glory in that for me, no challenge at all.
If they don't give me a worthy alternative witihin the company, I'll be looking for one someplace else...
I can't believe they gave my old job away, knowing that two years ago, when they sent me to this project, I was assured that my spot would be there when I came back...
I work for a great company and I'd hate to leave but I am so disappointed now.

Nephew came by to take me to lunch for my birthday. Let me drive his Nissan GTR. Very quick car.
