Tomorrow we are off to see Bear Lake.

I built a copy of a Burton "Woody". The first snowboard on the market. Brought it to Germany and when I tried to buy a ticket they looked at it, had a manager come over and look at it, then said they would not let me on the mountain with it. They had never seen one before and likened it to a mono ski. I learned to board on the local sledding hill, where people pointed fingers at me and laughed and on any other hill or road I could find.
Look who is having the last laugh now. :D The sport that now attracts more attention than skiing and is known world round. |
Ouch.....keep zapping myself with static electricity today
Reckon I just blew up a few components moving between two benches a little over a meter apart :( Time to go find the anti-static carpet spray |
How about a long static cord. Clip it to one of your ears.

That would have been interesting to build your own board Dave. It would have been pretty stiff in comparison. Even those early Burton boards had cracked edges if I remember correctly, were you able to do the same?
|
The early boards were wood, no edges and just little metal fins in the back. This was mid 80's and snowboards had been around since at least the late 70's, but these were still pretty primitive. The one we made was made from to 1/4" pieces of plywood, perpedicular to each other to make it exactly like a 1/2" piece of plywood. I believe the tip of each piece was bent separately - used my moms iron and ruined it. She found out is was ruined after ironing some clothes and ruining them. She was not very happy, donated the iron to my dad and made him buy her a new one - that was off-limits for woodworking. The original iron is still in the woodshop and does get used from time to time. :D Once the pieces were bent, they were laminated together, trimmed to shape, painted and then I waxed the bottom. I made the "bindings" out of sheet aluminum and velcro.

haha. Neat.

I first jumped on a board around 87/88. Couldn't afford one so had to use hire boards. Burton was the only board you could hire back then. I'll see if I can dig up a photo when I get home this arvo.

Despite my best efforts I am actually enjoying this graphic novel english class and I have read the first three books. I finished one thick one "Blankets" tonight in 2 hours. It's like 580 pages but that doesn't really matter since it is pictures. The story really grabbed hold of me for several reasons.
Reading for a class is a foreign experience for me. |
Good to see Max has finally graduated to picture books! Pretty soon, you'll be reading actual words!
|
I think the Pink Floyd sound track playing on my computer in the background also contributed to me reading... It gets kind of depressing in the end and raises some questions about religion.

You don't understand untill to take the class. The iconic abstraction and the gaps between the scenes/panels really gets your mind going and projects the story you want to read. I get bored with words and fall asleep. Movies are not personal enough. Comics are a happy medium between words and pictures. The art can be pretty far-out/trippy in ways that don't work in a movie so well. |
I scoffed at the thought when I first realized what the class was about, too. It's not superheros. It's semi-autobiographies that deal with some pretty deep issues.
It is a much more efficient (timewise) way to convery a complex story than either words or pictures alone. |
I just think you should not be in summer school, have a job instead and do things that people your age do. :)
|
I do feel guilty about not having a job. But at least these classes will get me a good bit further towards my degree as far as units in GE/support areas go.
|
This main character actually had some of the same properties/convictions I do.
