That should be good for some air

slodave 09-26-2012 12:38 PM

Why 32 gigs of RAM? You planning on crunching big graphics files at home?

Rick V 09-26-2012 12:53 PM

It's ramp Dave

This is a work computer. We ordered two of the same thing. Our ordinary average tif file is one GIG per frame. We just finished a job with over 1000 files. It takes our old computers weeks to process through the data.

I have it about 1/2 assembled. It has been 12 years or so since I built a computer. Things have changed a LOT. The video card taks up two slots, and is HUGE. I can't wait to put it through its paces.

Should I get a seat belt for my chair? I suspect it will blow me away for a few months. Then it will seem slow.

My 1st PC was a 4.77 MHz and had 640 K of ram and a 10 mb hard drive running DOS 2.1. I wonder how many orders of magnitude faster this new machine is? I feel sure the top super computers of 1982 were not up to this machine.

Because we need a real business computer that runs mapping software and can be custom built to do exactly what we need not what Steve Jobs thinks is the way to do it. And if Apple even made a computer to do what we needed it would cost $10,000.

Evening Gents

Nice toy Glen. Ramp it up.

Well, the rain was a total non event. :(

slodave 09-26-2012 03:56 PM

Why Tiff? That's old and bloated.

GH85Carrera 09-26-2012 04:23 PM

It had ZERO compression and no compression artifacts. Also the final product is delivered as a Geo-tif which is an industry standard geo referenced file. We do work with jpeg, jpeg 2000 and even Mr Sid. Those take longer to open and save due to the compression.

slodave 09-26-2012 04:52 PM

You ever look at DNG?

Rick V 09-26-2012 05:24 PM

Howdy Dave

slodave 09-26-2012 05:48 PM

Hi Rick.

GH85Carrera 09-26-2012 06:09 PM

Our customers all ask for the same few file formats. The ones that the industry standard map programs use.

What a shtty day at work. Somehow I just don't enjoy it when people come in with fingers like hamburger. Makes for just really unsatisfying surgery.

Hat's off to you Noah, I'd be losing my lunch.

Friend of mine was basically told he was going to be fired in the near future because of what his boss told him to do, and his boss is not backing him up.

happens at my workplace, also. which is why i won't train to place ART-lines. my boss didn't back up the last therapist that the dr. asked to place one, so d isn't going to do one.

what did the boss tell your friend to do?
