I guess now I try and get into contact with the other family members again and see where this goes. Protocol (which I'm tempted to break) dictates that I should not contact the two directly for now.

Good evening fellas.

i say that you get into contact with them. they can make the decision. then you know.

seriously. this is heavy schit.

slodave 04-06-2011 08:05 PM

I was in contact with a few of this family before I divorced. Writing a FB message to one of the "cousins" at the moment. We'll see what happens.

It was nice to actually see the face of my birth mother and biological brother last night. Fills a little more of the hole that exists in me. :)

slodave 04-06-2011 08:13 PM

Message sent.... Now I wait. This family is on the East Coast, so I think I will have another long night.

nynor 04-06-2011 08:17 PM

i cannot imagine. slodave, you have my best wishes and any other positive thing i can bestow.

slodave 04-06-2011 08:40 PM

Thanks, D! I appreciate it.

My parents told me about being adopted at an early age. Big book with big letters and lots of pictures. For the most part, I have been fine with things. What I do admit, is that I don't like looking at myself in the mirror. If I look too long, I see a face staring back at me that looks like no one else in my current family. In that respect, I am alone, who am I really? I have no physical connection with anyone.

As I get older and technology advances, I am getting more curios. Time marches forward, people get older and pass on. I think at this point, it would be a shame to let the opportunity pass. My parents are all for me meeting my birth mother and brother.

I'll keep y'all posted. :)

RKDinOKC 04-06-2011 08:49 PM

Best of luck. My Nephew's wife was adopted from birth. She didn't want to have children until after she met her birth family. I think she was afraid to with kind of the same issues you are having. Now they are very close and she has six children of her own.

They were put in touch with each other through a third party asking each if they were okay with it before giving them the info to contact each other to avoid any legal issues since it was an anonymous unwed mother deal when she was born.

slodave 04-06-2011 09:07 PM

Thanks, Richard.

I just abide by the unwritten rule that says you should not directly contact birth parents. It's been known to destroy current families. Current husband has no idea that his wife put a child up for adoption. Kid shows up unannounced... Messy stuff.

I'm tempted, but I can't.

porsche4life 04-06-2011 09:20 PM

Ok guys..... Enough with the serious stuff....

Here is what is on the Horizon. I am still considering going to Reno in May to help with LeMons. Looking at driving the trust 'rolla out. Would be ~1500miles each way. Would come back the North route through SLC and Denver just to maximize scenery.

How insane is this? I'm planning plenty of time into the drive, don't really have much going on in may....

slodave 04-06-2011 09:27 PM

Did a drive from Billings, Mt. to St. George, Utah in one leg. It's rough, but at your age.... Fun.

porsche4life 04-06-2011 09:35 PM

Not sure how long each "leg" would be.... I have no problem stopping and taking a two hour nap in the car and continuing on...

Please do, we're all wishing for a good outcome here.
But not rushing it seems wise. That third party link between you and your family sounds like a good idea. One thing you have to ask yourself is, will you be able to accept it if you're the only one wanting to reconnect with your past??
We have our fingers crossed for ya buddy!

Sid, wouldn't it be cheaper to fly? 1500 miles each way is a long way each way.
If you plan to make it a road trip, then ok, but maybe that would be more fun if you had some companionship. No?

porsche4life 04-06-2011 10:35 PM

Would be around $100 more to fly... But I would be flying over country I have never seen.... ABQ is as far west as I have ever been...

I am looking for a companion, but finding someone to ride with me in a car for several days, to go pit crew for a $500 car is proving difficult.... Seems some think I am insane.

porsche4life 04-06-2011 10:38 PM

G, you must remember where I am from... We have been known to drive 100mi each way just for dinner.....

livi 04-06-2011 10:47 PM

Morning, guys!

Wow! Dave! Good luck!!

porsche4life 04-06-2011 10:50 PM

Night gents...

Oh and G, I'm not sure who I would take... The one guy that I could stand being in a vehicle with for that long has intersession classes... I can think of a lady friend or two, but I don't see them being up for it...

slodave 04-06-2011 10:51 PM

Tell them they can hold up the car # signs.....

RKDinOKC 04-06-2011 11:35 PM

I've made lots of trips by myself from OKC to the east cast and back by myself. I did find myself singing non-existing made up songs in very bad tone to amuse myself at a couple of points.

Found Books On Tape very very valuable for these kind of trips.

And yes, to break the monotony I got off the beaten highway and took the scenic back roads several times. Each time though I had some interesting and potentially dangerous incidents with locals on the road. A couple of times backwoods locals in beat up old cars tried to run me off the road. I purposefully rear ended a Mustang full of teens, then speed off just as they all got out of the car and headed for mine. They were swerving so I couldn't pass and trying to force me off the road. Didn't hit them hard enough to do any damage to my car. They tried to pile back in and chase, but my 914 on two-lane twisty highways was too fast for them.

Geronimo '74 04-06-2011 11:41 PM

I'm trying to imagine you singing made up songs....
Do you happen to have some on tape?? wish to share?? :D:D

Why would anyone try to run a complete stranger off the road??? Were you singing off key?? :)

No, seriously, why would anyone do that???

GH85Carrera 04-07-2011 06:01 AM

I drove to 1,200 miles to Flagstaff AZ in one day. I could easily have gone another 300 miles if that was the final destination. I stopped in Flagstaff because it is up in the mountains and it was 42 degrees the next morning. If I had continued toward San Diego would likely have been 90 degrees in the morning. Starting the day hot and sweaty is not my favorite thing.

Way back in the 70s when I had my 914 I was going to Florida straight south from Montgomery Alabama. I was on a two lane road and came up behind pickup going the 55 MPH speed limit. When I tried to pass they sped up to prevent my pass. On my third try I gave it 100% GO. I shifted at red-line in third and stayed in 4th and as I was going past them they threw a beer bottle at me. I was nearing red-line in 4th which was double the speed-limit and finally pulled back over into the proper lane. They were right on my bumper as I approached a curve. Fortunately it was not much of a curve but it was more than the pickup could manage and they slid right off the road into a bunch of bushes. It looked like an explosion of green leaves in the rear window. The next few miles were curvy and fun without a pickup in the way. I went back home on a different route.

I was telling that story to a group of guys while we were sitting around drinking beer. One of the guys said he and his buddies would go out on the back roads around their small town and "race the folks trying to pass" just for fun. They thought is was a hoot to keep someone from passing. It was just something for bored teenagers to do on a Friday night when gas was 25 cents a gallon.

Geronimo '74 04-07-2011 06:24 AM

Friday night A-holes if you ask me... why would you keep someone on the other lane (maybe even with oncoming traffic) any longer than needed?? (this shiFt pisses me off., be glad I can't legally carry...)

and throwing beer bottles?? WTF dude. With all them guns you have over there, do you really want to annoy anyone that hard??? And it's fuh-king dangerous too, what if you cause and accident .... They probably just drive off I guess, what's a little fleeing the scene of an accident amongst friends... Some people...

Morning Glen

Porsche-poor 04-07-2011 07:24 AM

Morning guys. Back to normal if this can be normal????

porsche4life 04-07-2011 08:15 AM

Morning guys.... Had alcohol before 10 am.... Does that make mean I have a problem?

It was a microlab experiment, we put yeast in grape juice about a month ago..... made a small amount of very BAD wine....

Time for a micro test....

sounds good to me. i would then cut down through utah to I70 to avoid the drive across wyoming. you would be welcome to stay the night or nap or whatever.

Morning Glen

Yep, just Friday night jerks. I can only hope they craped their pants when they went off the road, and the truck was totaled. In many miles and years of driving I have had only one other jerk try to keep me from passing. I was in my 911 and it was no contest, I got past but he tailgated me for a while at fairly high speeds. I could see his wife yelling at him. He dropped back after a few miles. I hope she "cut him off" for a while. :D

porsche4life 04-07-2011 09:39 AM

We did.... But it did not ferment long enough or in the most optimal conditions.

I'd say no on having a problem based on its a class project. On the other hand if ya get out of bed and head right to the wine bottle then........well its a problem if its empty.

You do know they keep the good wine at the botton of the bottle right?

GH85Carrera 04-07-2011 10:16 AM

A friend of my co-worker gave us an OLD Compaq laptop. He was just going to trash it. He pulled the hard drive long ago. We stuck a drive in it that we had laying around. He had the original install CDs for Windows XP Home SP1a. I loaded them up and it has been updating for two days now. At least 200 hundred updates. It is crazy. I think I will make it a dual boot with Ubuntu 10.10 as well. I may use it out in my garage as a Pandora player, and internet surfer.

Porsche-poor 04-07-2011 10:27 AM

updates yuck. I love the one where you buy a brand new box plug it in, get it set up and the first thing it does is updates.

Geronimo '74 04-07-2011 12:01 PM

I powered up an old laptop from my sister a while back, 88 updates, don't wanna hear about 200...

GH85Carrera 04-07-2011 12:12 PM

Now I need to find a cheap used wireless network card.

Geronimo '74 04-07-2011 12:18 PM

One of them USB thingies, they're ok, and cheap too.

GH85Carrera 04-07-2011 12:46 PM

I just installed a fresh copy of Ubuntu 10.10 and it is doing 294 updates 314 MB total!

It will be a dual boot setup.

Porsche-poor 04-07-2011 12:50 PM

as long as we are talking tech stuff. anyone know if one can transfer content from a zune (msn) player to an ipod? The wifes zune died on vacation, not sure I can get it fixed.

GH85Carrera 04-07-2011 12:59 PM

If you can get them into a MP3 file you are OK.

Porsche-poor 04-07-2011 01:14 PM

I'll have to search the computer tonight and see how they are stored. She would rather keep a zune but they are phasing them out in favor of you buying one of their phones with an app and she likes her droid so thats not going to happen.
