I am not sure they will notice.

We have natural gas heat. In my quest for the perfect generator I drool on the Generac natural gas models. They switch on in seconds and off when the power is back on and run off of natural gas so no gasoline to mess with. If we had a lot of power problems I would have one. Since we have rare problems I don't have one.

We had a power failure yesterday that was just a few minutes. My battery backups for the modem and router keep it up for long enough to last until the power came back on. I got a text and email from every sensor on my alarm system that the power went off and was on battery power. The a text and email from each sensor that the battery was getting low, then a text and email the power was back on then a text and email from every sensor that the battery was charged again. I am going to call the alarm company and explain that it a bit of overkill.

My nephew built a big house in a neighborhood that the power goes off frequently. The gas for the house is propane. He buried a huge tank and installed a gauge/inlet for the propane company to fill it from his front gate without ever entering his property. He also put in a generator shed with generators that run off propane to keep the entire house live when the power goes out. The only alert he gets is when the propane tank starts running low.

I set up his internet. He was too far off grid to get any type of wired access. Hooked him up with 3 wireless internet providers each offering 2 Gigabit access. Put a mac mini in running Internet Gateway that ganged the three connections to make the internet much faster than any one or even two connections.

His house was built with that metal stud framing, giant faraday cage. Installed a wired network of 3 Airport base stations in bridge mode strategically placed to get good wifi anywhere in the house. Only problem we had was that one of his kids kept getting in the wiring closet and shutting off the mac mini that was the main router.

At the same time I setup his house I was trying and failed to extend my wifi to include the three houses across my back fence. The idea was the company would pay for my access to provide interent for the founder, president, and major stockholder, that live directly behind me in the next neighborhood. Problem was there is low twist per foot buried and above ground electrical and phone lines on my property easement following that border. Too much noise leakage creates a very effective wifi barrier. Wifi, even 5 watts and yagi antennas would not go more than 10 ft past the border. Finally after calling in several speciallist we all gave up and pay for internet to each house.

It's kind of interesting. You can stand i my yard with a wifi sniffer and see a bunch of the networks in my neighborhood. Step through the gate crossing the border and all my neighborhoods wifi networks disappear and the networks in the neighborhood behind me appear. It's like walking thru a door. Step back thru the gate those networks disappear and my neighborhood's networks appear.

When I had the high powered wifi I tried to get the neighbors on either side of me to just join my network instead of having to pay for their own internet and they wouldn't do it. Just don't understand. Offered them free internet, they passed and pay for their own from the same provider. Maybe I should have offered the internet at a discount instead of free? I checked and with the high powered wifi I could go 4 houses in any direction except across my back fence with full signal.

Now that everyone in the neighborhood is running their own wifi and I am running standard base stations instead of the high powered stuff I have to run 2 routers to get full signal across my own house. Still can't see any of the networks across my back fence.

When I was playing with the setup on my home router I added up a 5 Gigahertz channel and added a guest network but I named it "Hey you kids get off my LAN"

Morning all,

Not cold here

Today

And tomorrow
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1447877455.png

We don't often have power outages here, so I've never contemplated having a generator.

I'm hobbling today - I rolled my ankle at old fat peoples cardio class last night :(

GH85Carrera 11-18-2015 12:18 PM

Jeff, that sounds like a really stupid exercise. Roll your ankle is a bad was to lose weight unless you are so crippled you can't get anymore food or beer.

Outback Porsche 11-18-2015 12:41 PM

Yep, the whole thing is a bad idea, but I was rapidly turning into a fat bastard.

flipper35 11-18-2015 01:14 PM

Jeff, if it is for old people how do you manage to roll an ankle? Don't they sit around throwing beach balls back and forth or something? :)

Richard, I have that stupid iPhone in hand. It can send email but will not sync to the Exchange server. I did fix the mailbox that was corrupted. Or at least the server says it is now fixed. I suspect she has an email somewhere that is still busted. I also noticed she is at 1.86GB out of the 2GB limit we have set. Looks like she should start deleting some emails she doesn't need.

By the way, it connects to my Exchange account fine so it is something in her mailbox, but the MS remote connectivity analyzer for Exchange Active Sync says it is all hunky dorey when I tell it to set sync the inbox so maybe something in one of the folders is jacked.

RKDinOKC 11-18-2015 01:19 PM

Calendar items are common sources of corruption. I have two users using the cheap email client AirMail that is always sending incorrectly formatted calendar items. They are just too cheap to get a copy of Outlook for mac, and honestly Apple's Mail App is better than AirMail. Some people...

Shhh, don't tell anyone my wireless network is wide open with no security.
Have yet to see any strange devices on it.

the neighbors are afraid of you!!!!

flipper35 11-18-2015 01:44 PM

What better way to sucker unsuspecting machines to do your bidding than to entice them on to your network with free wi-fi.

The buyer of my SC contacted me via PM. Seems he bought the car from the guy that bought it from us. Hopefully, he will send pics this weekend after he gets it registered in Belgium.

Oh, the weather was warm but windy and rainy today. I hear we are expecting that white stuff over the weekend.

Well...Back up and running on the new Macbook Pro. Had to dig up and enter my Microsoft office license number. And had to call Vmware support and delete some files in the virtual machine data file to get my Windows 7 to run. Apple, Adobe, Quark, and all my other programs migrated just fine. This is the first time I've had ANY issues migrating to a new computer. It is nice to see I have 700 GB available.

That's pretty cool, Wayne. I hope he sends you some pics. :)

We're getting that weather right now. No white stuff for a while, thankfully.
