Fortunately for me I was deemed incompetent to paint by the person in charge of decorating the house. I was allowed to help strip wallpaper. Our entire house was wallpapered. No longer. Unfortunately I was designated the one to use masking tape and caulk. Fortunately we are done with painting as far as I know. Unfortunately my lack of knowledge on the subject has no bearing on reality. I think we are done, and I hope so.

I am allowed to decorate the garage and it has really cool pictures of my 911 and some poster pictures, one of the space shuttle and other awesome photos not allowed in the house. I have a 24x36 of this on my bathroom wall.

The missus asked me what I wanted for fathers day this Sunday, I replied that a blow job would do.

The silence was deafening.

I guess I know what I'm not getting.

And they wonder how the oldest profession stays in business...think the going rate down under is $100-$200. In Bangkok it's $20-$25US. In US it's $50-$100. Europe it's $40-$80 euros.

Its early and its already a day for the books. Went to leave and found that the counter balance spring for the garage door is broke. Did my head a lot of good lifting the damn thing up so I could get the cars out.

RKDinOKC 09-01-2015 07:58 AM

Them doors be freakin heavy!

HHI944 09-01-2015 09:05 AM

Ugh, that sucks. Those things are a raging **** to get replaced and tensioned.

Porsche-poor 09-01-2015 09:42 AM

Well thank God I own a 911. I could raise it up enough so the wife could get the floor jack under it so I could then get it up to a height to lift over head and hold while she backed out the cars. And here I thought a double car garage was a great thing.

DO NOT try to fix it yourself!

I almost lost a couple of fingers trying to fix an overhead door at my old workplace. The cable snapped and whipped across my left hand, hitting my pinky and ring finger. Luckily, it was just a flesh wound.

Got a root canal done this morning. yay

HHI944 09-01-2015 10:00 AM

It's definitely a diy job, it's just a pain getting the stupid springs tensioned right so that the door doesn't slam shut or fly up.
Do both of the springs if one died. Get them both on the bar, then put the bar back in place. Don't try to do each side entirely in one go, it'll just make life difficult. After the bar is back in place, bolt the spring collars to the center plate and start playing with tension. A 4-6' piece of rebar cut in half is all the special tool you'll need for tensioning.

And for the love of God, make sure you get the springs in the proper side.

Porsche-poor 09-01-2015 10:08 AM

I called in the experts. It is or was one big coil spring at the door header. Its in two pieces now. I think there is a special gravity law in place. Once the spring is broken all garage doors shall have 4 times the gravitational force applied to them. AKA no one is lifting one alone.

The cables are currently free and hanging loose from the over head section. I'm just glad it didn't break while someone or a car was under it.

RKDinOKC 09-01-2015 10:11 AM

When mine broke I called the overhead door company and they replaced the spring and tensioned it and I didn't have to lift a finger. Don't remember what it costed, but remember it wasn't much more than the cost of the spring itself. The guy said something about the replacement labor being cheap because they didn't want anyone killing themselves doing DIY on the broken spring. And was told if ever had any tension or alignment problems to call the number on the sticker he put on the door and they would service it for free.

When I replaced my door several years later, I went back with the same company and brand...Overhead Doors.

Porsche-poor 09-01-2015 10:14 AM

good plan. they will not be out till Tuesday but I can live with that for a few days.

porsche4life 09-01-2015 11:51 AM

I paid for the garage door spring too. He fixes everything and got it all working great again for a couple hundred. Easier than me messing with it for a day...

Porsche-poor 09-01-2015 11:55 AM

well having to lift it up did nothing for my head ache. I am hoping that they can get to it before next Tuesday.

pete3799 09-01-2015 01:07 PM

We're having a stretch of warm weather too. Got to 82* today. Figured I'd go for a swim after work........haven't seen my testicles since......low 50's at night is not helping the pool temps.

GH85Carrera 09-01-2015 01:14 PM

Our double garage door has two springs and they have never broken. The single door that I use gets a lot more use and it had a spring let go. Mrs. Carrera was home and watched a guy install the new spring and lube things up. He even left me a can of the special spray lube. I was not disappointed I did not "get" to DYI.

Evening Y'all
Okay having held David's hand a few times in some inter-continental repairs I strongly recommend using a pro here. Love ya brother.
My days as a wrench may be over, I am talking to a guy about going into HVAC work. Mostly Geo-thermal stuff

Nope not going to touch this one. Not sure I have enough hands to set the spring tension and call you at the same time.

Stijn!!

Whew. What a day. I finished up building my new computer. 138,072 Mb of RAM (128 Gig) and 6 cores & 12 threads with one TB SSD boot drive and 500 Mb scratch SSD and 2 TB mirrored spinning storage drives and two Nvidia GTX 980 video cards with 4 Gig ram each. It should zip right through email and Freecell! ;)
