My nephews went to private school at the wrong time. Then the kids in private schools were the ones that got kicked out of public schools.

My brother is 2.5 years older than I am. He was shipped off to a private military school for two years. He walked a lot of miles of "guard duty" with a rifle made of wood and lead. It did help him out some. I of course was the model child that other parents pointed at and asked why can't you be like Glen? (My parents both likely rolled over in their graves)

OK, maybe I wasn't the model child, but I never got in trouble, and never skipped school, or had discipline issues. The only time I got called to the principals office was the take photos of leaks in the basement of the school during a big rain. Really, he called me out of class and had me get my camera and take photos of the basement. I was one of the very few kids that even knew that school had a basement and really few that went down there. I was making money during the school day, taking photos for the principal to show to the school board to beg for the money to repair the leaks. The school was built in 1929.

I only got called to the principals office once and that was a mistake. There were two of us at the school with the same name.

Like virtually ever new school year, I was Glen the new kid. in late 1966 we moved to Oklahoma for a year while dad was over in Korea.

As a military brat the Air Force paid a lot of money to the school district for my education since we did not usually pay property taxes. They were always happy to have another Air Force brat. Somehow my paperwork was lost completely. I kept waiting for a class room assignment and they had no record of me. They finally stuck me in a classroom, but later were calling my name on the intercom for the entire school. My older brother went there as well. He heard it and figured I was in trouble on day one.

All they wanted was to be sure I had the paperwork for my mom to fill out so they got paid. Every school always was right on top of that.

I never had a single detention during my school years. Got a suspension, but never a detention.

PS: The kid deserved it.

RKDinOKC 01-15-2019 12:26 PM

When I was a senior I did get suspended over spring break. Not sure how that was supposed to be any sort of punishment though.

I was so busy with photography and making money in high school (I was a greedy money hungry kid) I was too busy at school to skip any day. I actually got my first regular job while sitting in math class. The commercial photographer the school had hired for years saw I had taken most of his business so he hired me. He was shooting photos of the kids in class, and he leaned over and whispered in my ear, "Ya wanna job" and I said sure. I think he wanted me to give him the work, but I still did the school photography all in my home darkroom. I worked for him after school, and on Saturday. He taught me a lot. I bought my first new car (1973 Super Beetle) and 13 months later ordered my 74 914 2.0 when I was 19.

I was in the principals office a lot, but it was to keep the Hassleblad system and my 35 MM camera system in his locked office cabinet. The principal, and one trusted office secretary and myself had the only keys to that cabinet.

On Tuesdays and Thursdays the state legislature met. I would go into the Alabama legislature every Tuesday and Thursday and meet a local reporter for the state's largest paper, the Birmingham News. Once I graduated, I spent many hours up there. And in Governor Wallace's office.

I changed pipes in fields all summer from junior high thru high school. The one that killed mw was across the street. My allergies would get so bad that my eyes would swell shut and I'd have to walk home blind. All paid for my first motorcycle.

flipper35 01-15-2019 01:37 PM

I did flooring, both commercial and residential, in those years.

RKDinOKC 01-15-2019 02:54 PM

Detailed cars, mowed lawns and did yard work for homes and businesses, did electronics assembly, had okra crops every summer, installed custom built in music systems in homes and businesses.

oh yeah, and helped my Dad do part time electrical in homes and busineses.

By the time I was 19 I had 3 cars, Audi 100LS (date car), Plymouth Satellite SebringPlus (hot rod), and 64 Ford Van (work truck), and had given my first car 68 Ford wagon (cost me $1) to brother Bob.
By the end of college all I had was a 10 speed bike.

RKDinOKC 01-15-2019 07:29 PM

Ut oh, someone at the office must have gotten a coffee cup warmer for Christmas. Got a notice that all electrical appliances must be approved and/or provided by the facilities staff to insure safety including coffee cup warmers. The notice usually says coffee pots, toasters, and space heaters.

Made me laugh...

Run away before it pops!!!

Happy hump day all. It looks like the entire country is going to have some cold weather, except the southern part of Florida. I am real glad I have no travel plans for a while.

Porsche-poor 01-16-2019 07:04 AM

Morning all. Currently 32 here. I think I'll stay inside and hug my non-approved space heater.

Jim Richards 01-16-2019 07:54 AM

Today’s temperature range is 60 degrees +/- 2 degrees. The rain continues all day today and tomorrow. I’m off to the dentist this morning for a crown. I can think of better things to do with my time, even on a rainy day,

Porsche-poor 01-16-2019 07:56 AM

ouch. Hope it goes well.

GH85Carrera 01-16-2019 08:05 AM

Crowns are really expensive. Good luck.

Porsche-poor 01-16-2019 08:21 AM

I'll drink to that!!!!!

Jim Richards 01-16-2019 10:38 AM

I’m as numb as if I drank that bottle. Crowns suck. This is the temporary one, while the shop fabs a permanent one for installation in two weeks. More fun with dentistry!!!
