I received my Sun Pass in the mail yesterday. The Florida turnpike system equivalent of the Pikepass we have in Oklahoma. Way better than the stupid EZ pass system up in Yankee land. The EZ pass makes you cruise through a special lane at a crawl and almost stop for it to read. In Oklahoma we blast through at the legal speed limit, 75 MPH. Oklahoma had one of the first toll road passes in the nation. January 1, 1991 is when we got to use them. The EZ pass system was not until 2007 in limited areas.
I will say the Florida system was easy to set up and account. Download an app to the phone, and tie that to the credit card and they mail the pass, and you are set. Very easy to use. The Florida system charges $4.95 for the pass, and in Oklahoma the pass is free. |
I will say that California’s new system for toll roads is easy. You just link your tag number to your credit card on their site and it charges as you go.

morning all.
Sid what mixer did you get for the Dole whip. I had to show that to the wife and now I have to get one. |
You got another think coming.
I heard that a lot when I was a kid. As in, "if you think you're going out to play before your chores are done, you got another think coming". It still sounds silly. |
The Texas system is totally stupid, but what do you expect for Texas. We were going down to the Dallas area regularly and Dallas has a lot of toll roads that make things a lot faster. Evidently they have multiple different systems. And the real kicker is you have to have to own the car and have it registered in Texas to get the turnpike pass. We can rent a car for 24 hours and with the rates it is dirt cheap and it is just a rental. The only way to use the turnpike is pay the rental company a nice bonus fee for the toll, and they mark it up a lot. Even if you drive your own personal car from another state, you can't get a toll pass, it is just the higher rate for them to photograph your tag, and mail you the invoice.
When we were in Yankee land we visited Seahawk (Paul) and he let let me borrow his EZpass. That made using the NJ turnpike a lot easier, and the George Washington bridge was solid traffic moving at 3 MPH at best. The toll plaza did not read the transponder. I don't have a front tag in Oklahoma, so I guess they took a picture of my bumper an maybe my face. I never got a notice from them. I had a legal EZpass, so I did not feel guilty. We just mailed back Paul's pass when we got to Erie, PA and were out of the turnpike areas. |
I've been on one toll road in my life, that was in the great state of PA.
Penn turnpike. I got on that one by mistake, cost me 50 cents to get off it. That was back before all that newfangled automatic pass stuff. back then you have to pay in change. I'm one of them stubborn grumpy old men who would die waiting in traffic before I would ever use a toll road on purpose. it just ain't right to charge me to use a road after all I pay in taxes already. So there. Didja ever realize there is a $ dollar sign on a keyboard, but no cents thingy? Doesn't seem right either. |

I just totally dated myself.
I said "good stuff, Maynard". I was met with a "huh? Who's Maynard?" it was a quote from a malt-o-meal commercial from the early 80s. I wonder how many people would even know what malt-o-meal is anymore. <iframe width="964" height="542" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/OoAJNn6SETs" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe> |

Sammy, you’re stuck in the past. I must be, too. Otherwise, why would I be renovating a ‘75 280Z?

Last time I went thru TX I never got no bill for toll roads. I did have my OK pike pass.
They had signs up oklahoma pikepass worked, But, never got a ticket and it did not show up on my bill. Just my 2¢ <- notice the proper symbol. shift 4 = $, option 4 = ¢ on my Mac keyboard. |
I understand the annoyance of toll roads, but in Oklahoma they are almost allways the best maintained, and smoothest roads around. If I drive to Tulsa on the free RT66 it will take easily two hours, and likely 2.5 hours with all the stops. The turnpike is 75 MPH all the way, and most traffice is moving faster.
We go out to one of the civil aviation airports regularly. We keep our airplane there. The turnpike is almost a direct route, and $1.40 with the Pikepass. It costs $2.05 and is much slower to have to stop and pay the cash price. Or I can drive down one of the busiest roads in the metro area, right past the big mall, and continuous business, lots of stop lights that will take two light cycles to get through, and slow going, but free. Of course you will use twice the gas, and have wear and tear on the gears, and brakes. All the while looking at the turnpike traffic flying past at 70 MPH legally. Most of it is three lanes each way. Even if I am not in any sort of hurry, it is just simply safer to use the Turnpike than risk the heavy traffic. One of the intersections is one of the top three deadly intersections and all due to HEAVY traffic. I avoid it like the mall on the day after Thanksgiving. There is no doubt at all, the turnpike is cheaper and safer for that trip. And a lot faster to boot. |
Using the ¢ is easy on a PC, it just takes a few more keystrokes. Hold the ALT key and type the number 0162
€ The Euro symbol and virtually every symbol you can image and some you have never seen are available with the ASCII code. They ain't on yer keyboard, but how often do you need them? £ ¥ Those and lots more: https://theasciicode.com.ar/extended-ascii-code/cent-symbol-ascii-code-189.html |
There is a menu bar widget can turn on from the keyboard preferences. It pops up a keyboard viewer that you can push the option/alt/contrl/shift keys each or any combination and see what key wll produce what character. You can then click on the character/symbol and it types it where you cursor was when you clicked on the viewer. That option has alway been available as part of the macos.
Used it a lot when editing spansish newsletters, even though I had no Idea what i was actually spelling with the ñ characters, |

I was still kinda cool in the past. The past was way better. But i was also poor in the past and I'm a long way from poor now. Maybe the past wasn't so good after all. Sure was greener. |
I’m really enjoying the present.
